Blackpool have appointed Mick McCarthy as manager on a short-term contract until end of 2022-23 season.
Yesterday (18 January) saw the Tangerines opt to relieve Michael Appleton of his duties with the club sat second-bottom in the Sky Bet Championship on goal difference, albeit just three points from safety.
McCarthy has consequently been appointed as manager with view of turning Blackpool’s difficult season around, after having enjoyed a solid 2021-22 season with a 16th placed league finish.
Speaking about his decision to take up the managerial role given his rich experience across the EFL, McCarthy said that he is “delighted” to return to the dugout after over two years away from the sport following a spell at Cardiff City.
On joining Blackpool, McCarthy added: “I’m thrilled to be back up at a Club where I’ve had many battles in the past and hopefully we can achieve some of the similar success of those years.”
Blackpool’s Chief Executive, Ben Mansford explained why McCarthy has been hired until end of season, as he commented: “Mick has extensive experience at the highest level including over 700 games at Premier League and Championship level, along with recently taking on a similar challenge at Cardiff.”
Mansford also stated that he sensed “excitement” within McCarthy to take up the job when approached, whilst also demonstrating “calmness and confidence” about the tricky challenge that lies ahead across the next four-and-a-half months in the fight for Championship survival.
McCarthy will be joined by Terry Connor as his assistant manager, having previously worked together at clubs like Wolves, Ipswich and Republic of Ireland.
Blackpool’s Sporting Director, Chris Badlan therefore is happy to have “two hard-working, honest people” who can provide the playing squad with “the best opportunity” to avoid relegation, whilst affording the club timme to review the “long-term vision” and future managerial plans.
McCarthy will make his debut in the home dugout on Saturday 21 January against fellow relegation battlers, Huddersfield Town at Bloomfield Road in a 3pm GMT kick-off.
