A selection of oil paintings by Dallas-based artist Jessica Vollrath. Born to an African American father and Mexican mother, Vollrath discovered her love of painting around the age of 8 and spent her free time exploring with the various art supplies her mother found at garage sales. She met the late Dr. Marilyn Daniels at the age of 15 at an art opening. With Daniels’ encouragement, Vollrath went on to receive her BFA from Howard University in 2011 and MFA from Texas Woman’s University in 2017. Her work is focused primarily on the sacred and familiar narratives of humankind’s search for connection and immortality:
“My work is in a constant state of evolution. There is a tension between the past process and a new freedom that wants to be born. This is visible in the narratives as well, as I explore the space of being a multi-faceted spiritual individual in the heavily absorbent and mundane atmosphere of family life. The dichotomy of being fully oneself while also existing as one dimensional (based on the role you fill) can be isolating and freeing. There is a constant push and pull of vanishing and emerging.”
