Mt. Fuji is Japan’s iconic mountain loved by locals and tourists alike, which means there are plenty of spectacular views and adorable snacks to celebrate its beauty!

Here we’ll look at some recommended sightseeing spots and delicious local dishes from around Mt. Fuji and its Fuji Five Lakes.

1. Yoshida no Udon: Specialty Local Fujiyoshida Cuisine

Yoshida no Udon is a traditional dish from Fujiyoshida City, Yamanashi Prefecture. It is an impressive udon dish of thick noodles, horse meat, and boiled cabbage. There are nearly 50 shops that serve Yoshida Udon scattered about the city. Each shop boasts its own unique flavors, so you can find the one you love the most!

Each shop uses a condiment called ‘suridane,’ a mix of sesame, Sichuan pepper, and chili pepper. The suridane seasonings also vary by shop, just like the noodles, so you can enjoy a different taste wherever you go.

2. Mt. Fuji Melonpan: Adorable Fuji Shaped Cakes!

Mt. Fuji Melonpan, or melon bread, is sold at the Amanoya Bakery, located at the Mt. Fuji 5th Station Rest House.

These adorable melonpan are made in the shape of Mt. Fuji, and have become quite popular among young people. With a crisp outside and fluffy inside, these limited-edition breads can only be found here! A must-try when visiting the Fuji Five Lakes area.

3. Fuji Radar Dome Building: Best Spot for Viewing Mt. Fuji

The Fuji Radar Dome Building has long been used for Japanese weather observations. It currently serves as a place for children to learn through hands-on activities.

The Fuji Radar Dome Building is also a famous scenic spot for viewing Mt. Fuji! The vastness of Mt. Fuji looming right before you is a powerful view that you are unlikely to experience anywhere else.

4. Yamanakako Hananomiyako Park: Enjoy the Colors of Each Season

Yamanakako Hananomiyako Park has an expansive scenery of flower fields set against a Mt. Fuji backdrop.

The 300,000 square meter area is covered with all kinds of flowers, whose colors change with the seasons. There are plenty of activities for families to enjoy in Hananomiyako Park in addition to the free outdoor area, including Seiryu-no-Sato Park, and a limited-edition flower shop.

Information on what flowers are in bloom is regularly updated on the official website, so you can check it out before your visit.

5. Fujikyu Highland: Japan’s Leading Roller Coaster Theme Park

Fujikyu Highland is famous for its scream-machine roller coasters, including ‘FUJIYAMA,’ ‘DODODONPA,’ ‘Eejanaika,’ and ‘Takabisha.’

In addition to roller coasters, there is plenty to be enjoyed by all kinds of people, from friends and families to couples, including the haunted house, ‘The Super Scary Labyrinth of Fear,’ and the family-friendly, foot-pedaled rowboat, ‘Water Ace.’ There are also food courts where you can enjoy local cuisine, fast food, and cafes. You can easily spend an entire day at this park.

6. Yamanakako Teddy Bear World Museum: So Many Teddy Bears!

Of course, teddy bears are loved by all kinds of people all around the world. This private museum, the Yamanakako Teddy Bear World Museum, has a collection of such teddy bears, and is located right on top of a small hill near Mt. Fuji and Lake Yamanaka. There is a wide variety of works on display, from top artists to collaboration items, making it a fantastic place to visit for teddy bear fans from all over.

There is a wealth of teddy bear goods at the museum shop, all carefully selected by staff. There are even original, limited-edition items that you can only find here, definite must-haves for teddy bear fans. After the museum, enjoy a delicious meal at the neighboring ramen shop, Lille Cafe. Adored by the locals, this shop is pretty famous for its delicious ramen!

7. Yamanashi Prefectural Mount Fuji World Heritage Center: Learn All About Mount Fuji

The Yamanashi Prefectural Mt. Fuji World Heritage Center is the center for understanding the value of Mt. Fuji as a World Heritage Site. The Fugaku 360 (360-degree view of Mount Fuji) is a multiscreen sculpture of Mt. Fuji made from traditional Japanese washi paper, which fully explains all about Mt. Fuji and its surrounding area.

Download the official guide app, Fujimeguri, for a more useful and interactive tour of the museum. Scan markers on the floor map or the figures of people related to Mt. Fuji to see original animations explaining various information about Mt. Fuji and the Asama Shrine. Museum guidance is available in seven languages including English, Chinese, and Korean.

At Fujisan Sengen, you can share a personal message about what you think about Mt. Fuji and how you hope to protect it. You can even reread older messages you wrote by searching the date and hometown. What a great way to create fond memories of your trip!

8. Kawaguchiko Herbkan/House of Fragrance: Create Dry Flower Arrangements and Pressed Flowers

Kawaguchiko Herbkan / House of Fragrance is located on the southern shore of Lake Kawaguchi. This tourist attraction is free to enter, and you can enjoy food, shopping, and even hands-on experience classes. The herb garden is full of about 200 kinds of herbs, such as lavender, rose and chamomile. At the café inside the glass house, you can enjoy single flavors, blends, and more, made with different colors and aromas depending on the day.

In the workshop on the second floor of the main building, there are a wide variety of things you can create and experiences to try, including herb flower arrangements, pressed-flower postcards and bookmarks, beautiful interior decorations such as herbariums, pressed flower picture frames, and resin-covered flower pendants and acrylic coasters. Experience classes are open to children as well as adults at all times, so if you visit Kawaguchiko Herbkan House of Fragrance, why not give one a try?

9. Michi no Eki Narusawa: A Rest Area Overlooking Mt. Fuji

Michi no Eki Narusawa, located along National Route 139, is a roadside station that has become popular for of its location overlooking Mt. Fuji. Michi no Eki Narusawa offers a wide range of dishes, from local specialties to light snacks. Enjoy popular local specialties, made with local ingredients, such as Fuji Sakura Soft Serve and Sendo Soba, which can only be tasted here. At the Bussankan Product Shop, you can buy local Narusawa vegetables such as fresh potatoes and tomatoes. It’s also a great place to buy souvenirs.

10. Fujiyama Komitake Shrine: Adorable Mount Fuji Amulets

Fujiyama Komitake Shrine is a historical shrine founded in 937 (Johei Era Year 7). This shrine is located at the fifth station of Mt. Fuji. It is sometimes called the ‘Tengu Garden,’ which comes from a legend in which a Tengu (a Japanese folkloric goblin) once ruled the shrine. Many people come to pray here for many things, such as a long, healthy life, safe childbirth, and a happy marriage. You can also buy these cute and popular Mt. Fuji-shaped charms at Fujisan Komitake Shrine. They are popular with tourists, and make a great memory of your trip to Japan.
