1. Explore the Bock Casemates
Visiting famous tourist attractions in Luxembourg City is the shortcut to having fun in the capital.
And when the topic’s about the city’s tourism hotspots, you’ll never not hear Bock Casemates.
Bock Casemates are a series of underground tunnels.
During the war in the 18th century, they served as military fortifications.
This defense network is now one of the must-visit places in Luxembourg!
After all, it’s not every day that you’ll get to walk in historic passageways, canon slots, and hidden chambers that have witnessed countless important historical events.
Bock Casemates is really one of the best things to visit in Luxembourg City and definitely a must when you visit the capital!
2. Visit the Grand Ducal Palace
The Grand Ducal Palace is one of the best places to visit in Luxembourg.
For one thing, it’s probably the most visually striking building in the city (IMO).
Its exterior combines Gothic Revival and Renaissance styles.
So, whether you use it as a backdrop or a standalone subject, taking snaps of the palace is always a fun experience, even for us locals.
If you’re lucky, you may even glimpse the Grand Duke and his family, as the palace serves as their official residence.
But, all the fun aspects of this building aside, the Grand Ducal Palace also holds immense historical and cultural significance for Luxembourg.
It originally served as a city hall in the 16th century, was transformed into a concert hall by German forces during WWII, and was reclaimed by the Luxembourgers by 1945, becoming an enduring architectural symbol of the Monarchy.
The palace is open to the public during the summer. So, if you want the most fun, I highly recommend joining a tour to enter this majestic structure!
3. Discover the Luxembourg City History Museum
Before you wonder how a museum can be fun…
The Luxembourg City History Museum is different from your traditional museum.
It doesn’t focus on old artwork and sculptures like most museums do.
It’s all about showcasing Luxembourg City’s 1000 years of urban history! (Yup, the last zero ain’t a typo).
The museum takes you on a chronological journey through the city’s evolution from its medieval origins to its architectural marvel.
The first floor tells the story of the oldest architectural remnants of the city.
Then, every time you go up the floor, you get closer to discovering the current and even future developments.
Witness how artifacts, documents, images, models, and animations all work together to tell the story of Luxembourg City.
When it’s open, don’t forget to check out the 4th floor to see which temporary exhibition is up and running!
4. Stroll Along the Corniche
Ask my closest friends what my favorite things to see in Luxembourg city center are.
I guarantee you’ll hear them mention Corniche among the top 5 choices.
But then, I guess that’s unsurprising, considering that this balcony is not just one of the most beautiful places in Luxembourg—it’s dubbed Europe’s most beautiful balcony.
From above, you’ll witness how the charming houses blend with stone walls, trees, and the flowing river.
Enjoy an interestingly majestic perspective of the Alzette Valley and the Grund District.
Of course, Corniche is nothing short of stunning during the daylight.
But did you know that strolling along this balcony is also one of the best things to do in Luxembourg by night?
That’s because when the sky turns dark and the city houses light up, the view transforms into a golden city you’ll only see in fairytales.
If you’re looking for things to do in Luxembourg City in one day or two, never skip the Corniche in your itinerary. Trust me, pictures alone don’t do its view justice.
5. Relax in the City Parks
Most of Luxembourg City’s fun involves urban explorations.
But there’s one tranquil spot in the city where you can rejuvenate amidst nature.
That’s Parc de Ville, a massive 20-hectare park perfect for relaxing or finding things to do in Luxembourg City with kids.
Though it’s within the city, if you find the right nook, you’ll be surrounded by greenery everywhere you look!
Or, more specifically, you’ll find a good balance of lawns, playgrounds, fountains, and seating areas.
As you can imagine, this park is one of the best places to take a stroll, read a book, or ride a bike to take a break from the city (while still within the city).
Love the nature offered by Parc de Ville?
You can experience even more nature-packed activities in Mullerthal, less than an hour’s drive from the city.
Because of its rich natural resources, hiking is one of my favorite things to do in Mullerthal.
There, you can enjoy views of waterfalls, valleys, lush forests, and even castles while experiencing nature’s magic!
6. Visit Grund District
One of the top things to do in Luxembourg City is to visit the Grund district.
It’s located along the banks of the Alzette River.
From that alone, you can already imagine just how scenic this area can be.
Combine the river’s view with the charming architecture of the cozy restaurants that serve the best Luxembourg traditional food.
No wonder that the Grund District has never lost its popularity.
When I visit the area in the afternoon, I love strolling through the narrow, cobbled streets to enjoy the fresh air from the river.
I always book a dinner table at night before tables fill up (Grund is especially popular at night).
My go-to restaurant in the Grund is Um Plateau, which serves various culinary delicacies like Luxembourgish charcuterie.
And anytime you want good beer, just drop by Brauerei – Big Beer Company!
7. Walk through the Alzette & Pétrusse Valley
The Alzette Valley is considered a national treasure of Luxembourg City.
Here, nature meets culture, architecture, and history.
And people get to enjoy the intersection between these different elements!
I love walking through this valley both in the mornings and the afternoons.
There are tons of shops and recreational places to explore, including the nearby Skatepark Péitruss, where you can see skaters exhibit their skills.
Of course, the best way to end a walk that includes the top sights in Luxembourg City is to grab a bite and drink in Grund’s very popular Scott’s pub.
The staff there are some of the friendliest in town. And their food and drinks never disappoint.
So, you’re sure to have a good time!
I love pairing the Scott’s Burger or pizza with non-alcoholic beer.
8. Explore the National Museum of History and Art (MNHA)
The National Museum of History and Art is a must-see in Luxembourg City.
Yup, this museum is different from the one I already mentioned.
Remember, the earlier Luxembourg City History Museum is all about Luxembourg City’s urban history.
The MNHA, the other hand, explores the history and art of Luxembourg (the country) itself.
It has everything you can wish to see from a well-curated museum.
You’ll explore Gallo-Roman art in one room, medieval sculpture in another, and contemporary art throughout the museum.
Both old and modern pieces are in a single location!
Make sure to check out the special exhibit “The Fortress of Luxembourg,” as it’s always my favorite.
9. Shop at Place Guillaume II and Place d’Armes
If you’ve ever looked up the best places to visit in Luxembourg city, you’ve surely heard about Place Guillaume II and Place d’Armes before.
Place Guillaume II, or Knuedler, is home to Luxembourg City Hall.
It hosts market events weekly (often on Wednesdays and Saturdays) where you can buy fresh flowers, produce, crafts, and other regional food at reasonable prices!
Try to arrive early during these market days to get the best quality products!
Place d’Armes is another shopping haven for locals and city tourists.
Dubbed the “Parlour of the City,” this hotspot is surrounded by diverse cafés and restaurants.
Exploring this area is always one of the fun things to do in Luxembourg City, as you won’t be hungry or bored!
10. Enjoy the Nightlife in Clausen District
In Luxembourg, several districts are known for their never-sleeping nightlife.
Grund, Clausen, and Hollerich.
Of course, I’ve been to all these places as a local.
But I think Clausen District (or, more specifically, the Rives de Clausen) most accurately represents the city’s vibe.
Mending the old and the new– many shops here have repurposed old factory buildings to be modern entertainment spots (pretty amazing to see in person).
And since the bars and clubs here are steps away from each other, it’s the perfect place for bar hoppers like me!
This place offers the best things to do in Luxembourg city at night!
My Final Thoughts on Fun Things to do in Luxembourg City
There are literally dozens of fun things to do in Luxembourg City.
But I know most tourists only get the chance to explore a portion of them, which is why I made this “shortlist.”
