Fifteen employees of a popular Vancouver bar are celebrating the luck of the Irish after they shared a $1 million Lotto Max prize.
The co-workers from Foy’s Irish Bar picked up the lottery win last Friday. They might have a devil of a time divvying up the loot, as each winner is owed $66,666.66.
James Browne, who bought the tickets on behalf of the others, broke the news on a group chat and said it took “a good 20 minutes” before everyone was convinced it was for real.

“I scanned the first few tickets on my BCLC Lotto! App, and won $20,” Browne told BCLC in a news release. “The last ticket was the big winner. I walked down to Kingsgate Mall to double-check the ticket as I needed to make sure.”
While Browne was certain at that point, the others didn’t believe him right away, and for good reason. “This is the first time we ever played together,” he said.
The group held a celebration — at Foy’s, of course — and are planning another one soon where they all work.
Browne said most of the group are from Ireland and they feel “blessed” to pick up the prize while living away from their families.
The winning ticket was bought at the Circle-K at Davie and Bidwell streets in Vancouver.
BCLC said Lotto Max players across the province have won more than $98 million so far in 2024.
The game, with draws every Tuesday and Friday, is played countrywide. The maximum $70 million jackpot was just won on Tuesday night by a ticket bought in Ontario; Friday’s Lotto Max jackpot is $40 million.
