The 2022 NCAA Tournament continues with eight games Sunday as the first weekend — containing the first and second rounds — comes to a close. And there’s plenty at stake because those games will decide who grabs the final eight spots that are up for grabs in next week’s Sweet 16. Considering what’s at stake and the caliber of the programs competing, it could be another legendary day of March Madness drama.
While the Cinderella stories of lesser-known programs are one of the best dynamics of the Big Dance — some even captivating our hearts this week — the action Sunday will mostly be about the sport’s big brands. Take Sunday’s first game, for example. It features No. 5 seed Houston playing No. 4 seed Illinois in a battle of programs with a combined 11 Final Four appearances. The Cougars reached the Final Four just last season and are looking to make a run back. However, getting through an Illinois team with All-American center Kofi Cockburn will be a daunting challenge.
But that’s not even close to the biggest matchup in store for Sunday in terms of blue blood teams dueling it out. That prize goes to No. 2 seed Duke and No. 7 seed Michigan State in a game that will take center stage at 5:15 p.m. ET on CBS. It could be Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski’s final game, but the retiring legend owns a 12-3 all-time record against Spartans coach Tom Izzo. With the Blue Devils playing in Greenville, South Carolina just a few few hours from home, Duke should have an edge.
For those who care little about the evening’s mainstream storyline, there will be alternatives, including a compelling clash in styles between defensive-oriented No. 6 seed Texas and No. 3 seed Purdue’s elite offense. So sit back, grab the remote and get ready to bid the opening weekend of the Big Dance farewell with one last wall-to-wall slate of games.
Be sure to check in often as this story will update every single time the NCAA Tournament schedule is adjusted. Games will be aired on CBS, TNT, TBS and truTV — and as always, you can watch every game in the tourney via March Madness Live beginning Tuesday night with the First Four. All times ET
