Rory McIlroy, reigning champion Jordan Spieth and 2021 Masters winner Hideki Matsuyama are among the headliners for the 2022 Valero Texas Open, which tees off Thursday at TPC San Antonio. It’s the final tuneup for the PGA Tour’s first major next week at Augusta National, and McIlroy is playing in San Antonio for the first time since his only appearance in the Texas Open in 2013. He is looking to win his fifth major championship and complete the Career Grand Slam next week in Augusta. Caesars Sportsbook lists McIlroy as the 15-2 favorite in its latest 2022 Valero Texas Open golf odds. Spieth is the 14-1 second choice, and Corey Conners (18-1) is the only other golfer who comes in under 20-1. Matsuyama and Abraham Ancer both are listed at 20-1, and Bryson DeChambeau is back at 28-1.
Will McIlroy go for broke or save it for next week? And is he worth the price you’ll pay for making him one of your 2022 Texas Open Fantasy golf picks? Would an overlooked player like Keegan Bradley (35-1) or Maverick McNealy (35-1) put you in a good spot to win? Before you consider any Fantasy golf rankings or make any bets on the 2022 Texas Open, be sure to check out the Fantasy golf projections and betting advice from SportsLine fantasy expert Riley Gates.
Gates is a writer for 247Sports and has covered a range of sports for nearly five years. He has followed golf closely for much longer and has a profound knowledge of the sport. He also knows what it takes to win, on the course and in fantasy sports.
Gates has been on fire all season. At the Valspar Championship, seven of his picks finished in the top 12. They included Sam Burns, who claimed the title at Innisbrook for the second straight year. At the Arnold Palmer Invitational, nine of his top 10 picks finished in the top 20, and at the Honda Classic, eight of his picks finished in the top 16.
The expert also was on the money at Phoenix, where his five top selections all ended up in the top 10. He nailed his picks at the Sentry, with four of his top seven picks posting top-five finishes, and he duplicated that at the Hero World Challenge. Anyone who has followed Gates is way up.
Now, Gates has analyzed the Valero Texas Open field and just released his coveted fantasy golf rankings for this week’s event. You can only see his fantasy golf rankings and Valero Texas Open picks at SportsLine.
2022 Texas Open golf expert picks
One player Gates is really high on for this week is Spieth, who should attempt to be in top form as he gets ready for Augusta. The Texas native got his first victory since 2017 in San Antonio last season and should come in feeling good as he tries to bounce back. He was one of many notable names who missed the cut at the Players, and he failed to advance from the group stage at Match Play. But he had his moments in Austin, and he is 24th on tour this season in greens in regulation at 70.6 percent, and that’s a critical stat at the Texas Open.
On the other hand, the expert is completely fading Ancer, who doesn’t come close to cracking his top 10. The Mexican-American star had done little to instill confidence before his run to the quarterfinals of the Match Play. He missed the cut at Valspar, and the finish in Austin was one of his two top-10’s in 11 tournaments this season. The other was at Mayakoba in November. He also hasn’t performed particularly well in San Antonio, making the top 25 once in four tries. He is 58th in strokes gained off the tee and outside the top 100 in all other strokes gained categories.
How to set your 2022 Texas Open Fantasy golf rankings
For this week’s event at TPC San Antonio, the fantasy expert is backing a major long shot in his top 10 who comes in at well over 40-1 in the latest PGA odds. Gates says this golfer has been coming on strong and could take advantage of the weaker field this week “to keep this ball rolling.” You can find out who it is, and check out all of Gates’ top Valero Texas Open fantasy golf picks at SportsLine.
