2024 Miami Grand Prix Preview – Sport Grill

F1 heads Stateside to Florida for the 2024 Miami Grand Prix as Max Verstappen continues to head the standings. 

Verstappen heads the drivers’ standings with a 25-point lead over Red Bull teammate, Sergio Perez, whilst Charles Leclerc sits nine points behind the Mexican after five rounds.

This weekend however will see attention turn to hometown hero, Logan Sargeant as he continues to chase his first top-ten finish in F1 with Williams.

Teams also will again have to deal with the Sprint weekend format once more which makes its first appearance at this event – with the two previous visits having adhered to the traditional weekend format.

Five Key Pointers

• With everyone having made one stop in last year’s race compared to a previous two-stopper on debut in 2022, pit stop strategies could well be the same this year if there is little degradation.
• Pole position doesn’t seem the best starting position with both pole-sitters in two previous visits having failed to go on to take victory.
• As one of F1’s more technical circuits with a variety of corners and straights, a medium-level downforce is required around the Miami International Autodrome.
• Miami should produce plenty of opportunities for overtaking across Sprint and GP such was its high number of overtakes in 2022 and 2023 despite fans viewing the track as boring.
• McLaren and Mercedes will be hoping for a clean practice session with both team set to introduce upgrades, with view to closing their gap to Ferrari in dry conditions.

Last Time Out

An aborted Q3 lap from Verstappen left him ninth on the grid and Perez on pole after a late red flag in 2023, but Verstappen used the alternate strategy to take victory from Perez on Lap 48, once both drivers had made their pit stops whilst Fernando Alonso finished third.
