PHOTOSHOOT CHECKLIST & PLANNER
Planning a photo shoot can be daunting, but not with our planner!
This planner is designed to help you plan and execute a successful travel photoshoot with ease. It includes a checklist for equipment, packing, location scouting, mood boards, and more – everything you need to know to make your shoot run smoothly.
Play with fall leaves
One of the best things about fall is all the beautiful leaves! They make for a great backdrop in photos, and they can also be used as props.
If you’re using leaves as props in your photos, be sure to choose ones that are colorful and in good condition. Avoid any that are brown or wilted, as they won’t look as good in photos.
Or get perfect-looking fake ones for a photoshoot!
Once you’ve got your leaves, it’s time to start planning your shots. You can use them as a backdrop, incorporate them into a fall scene, or even just hold them up in front of the camera for a fun and festive selfie.
On Instagram, a common fall shot is to throw leaves in the air – and it looks great!
So get creative and have fun with it! There’s no wrong way to use leaves as photo props.
Get cozy with nature and walk into a fall foliage area
Take advantage of the crisp autumn air and beautiful fall foliage by venturing outdoors for your photoshoot.
Embrace the season by incorporating natural elements into your photos, like leaves, branches, and pumpkins.
Things as simple as a fall foliage lane, wooded or leaf peeping are great to bring in the autumn vibes of colorful landscapes!
When planning your shoot, be sure to choose a location with plenty of trees. This will give you the best selection of leaves to work with.
- As you’re taking pictures, pay attention to the angle of the sun and the direction of the wind.
- If you’re shooting with a DSLR camera, be sure to use a tripod so you can capture sharp images.
- If you’re using a smartphone such as an iPhone, use the portrait mode (for that dreamy look)
Once you’ve got your shots, be sure to edit them carefully. Highlight the colors of the leaves by increasing the contrast and saturation, or go for a more natural look by keeping the edits to a minimum.
Pose at a Pumpkin farm! (or a pumpkin park)
Pumpkin farms are a popular destination during the fall season, and for good reason! Not only do they make for a beautiful setting, but they’re also full of props that can help make your photos more festive.
When planning a pumpkin farm photoshoot, be sure to consider the time of day and the lighting conditions. Early morning or late afternoon light is usually the most flattering, so plan your shoot accordingly.
Once you’ve got your timing sorted out, it’s time to start thinking about props. Of course, pumpkins are a must-have, but you can also get creative with hay bales, corn stalks, and other fall decorations.
If you do not live near a pumpkin farm, try to create a little setup at home. You can buy decorative pumpkins from Amazon or real ones from your local grocery store to create that look!
Note: If you’re shooting with kids, consider incorporating some fun activities into your photos. They can help pick out pumpkins, play in the leaves, or even just sit and enjoy a pumpkin spice latte.
No pumpkin patch, no problem! Pose with pumpkins (real or fake ones)
Pumpkins are a quintessential part of fall, so it’s only fitting that they make an appearance in your fall photos!
One of the cutest ways to use pumpkins in your photos (without visiting a pumpkin farm) is to just incorporate them as part of your portrait shots.
Like, use them to cover your eyes, place them near you, hold them, or throw them in the air.
If you do not have a fall-y background, blur what is behind the subject (to blur use Portrait mode on iPhones, or widen the aperture in DSLR). Nowadays, many photo editing apps will also allow you to create this photographic blur, often referred to as ‘Bokeh’.
Sit on a haystack
One of our favorite fall photo shoot ideas is to incorporate a haystack as a prop/backdrop. Not only is it a great way to add some rustic flair, but it’s also the perfect spot for snuggling up with a cozy blanket or taking a nap in the autumn leaves.
Many of the pumpkin farms and corn maze fields will have hay stacks for visitors to use (so you can sit down, and take pictures).
We took this photo (as shown) on a sunflower farm.
Depending on where you live, you might find hay bales available to you. Use them for your fall photoshoots (but do not trespass into unknown farms).
If you’re using a haystack as a prop, be sure to take some time to style it beforehand. You can add a few pumpkins or other fall decorations to make it more festive, or keep it simple with just a few strategically placed leaves.
Once you’ve got your haystack set up, it’s time to start taking some photos! When shooting outdoors, take advantage of the natural light by positioning your subject in front of the haystack.
For an indoor shoot (like a covered barn), you can place the haystack near a window for some beautiful soft light.
No matter how you choose to style it, a haystack is a great way to add some extra charm to your fall photos!
Wear a sweater and strike a pose
Get creative with your posing and try incorporating some fun props into your photos. Autumn or fall weather is also sweater weather – with chunky knits and scarves!
Use earthy tone colors in your oversized sweaters, and strike a pose against a plain fall-y backdrop. There are endless possibilities when it comes to fall photoshoot ideas.
Pro tip: If you live in an area where fall colors are not prominent, sweaters in earthy colors will do the trick, and then use a fall-themed Lightroom preset to warm up the overall look.
Add a beret or a felt hat for an overall fall vibe
A hat can be a great addition to any fall outfit, and it also makes for a great prop in a fall photoshoot. Whether you’re using a beanie, fedora, or even just a simple baseball cap, it can help add some style and personality to your photos.
When incorporating a hat into your fall photos, be sure to experiment with different angles and positions. A hat can drastically change the look of a photo, so it’s important to play around with it until you find the perfect shot.
Once you’ve got your hat shots sorted out, don’t forget to take some photos without them! This will help show off your fall outfit and give your photos some variety.
I have also captured a few fall photos in a fall, and without any foliage around it. But because it’s a fedora (paired with an earthy or warm tone sweater and scarf) it oozes that autumnal look!
So don’t be afraid to experiment with hats this fall – they make for great props and can really help add some personality to your photos!
Focus on the fall leaves for framing
One of my favorite things about fall is the beautiful autumn leaves! They not only make a great backdrop in photos, and they can also be used for framing and more.
Framing is simple. In case you didn’t know, framing in photography refers to the technique of drawing attention to the subject in the photo by blocking other parts/objects present in the scene.
Frames can be located at the center or along the edges (like a frame).
Focus on the fallen leaves on the ground
When using a fall pathway (or leaves on the ground), you can either play with the leaves or just capture them without the subject.
Be sure to get down on the ground to capture all the colors of the leaves. The different angles will give your photos depth and make them more interesting. You can also use a shallow depth of field to focus on a few leaves and blur out the background.
Don’t forget to experiment with different shutter speeds, too. A slower shutter speed will capture the motion of the leaves, while a faster shutter speed will freeze them in place.
Tip: The best thing about framing, or capturing them on the ground is that you don’t have to have the perfect leaves – let them be in their elements!
Set up a fall-themed picnic
Picnics are a classic summer activity, but they can be just as fun in the fall!
When planning a fall picnic photoshoot, be sure to choose a scenic location with beautiful fall foliage.
Once you’ve found the perfect spot, it’s time to start packing your picnic basket. In addition to food and drinks, be sure to pack some blankets or pillows for lounging.
When you’re ready to start taking photos, set up your picnic blanket and get creative with your shots. You can incorporate fall leaves, pumpkins, or other festive props into your photos. Or, keep it simple and let the natural beauty of the season shine through.
Use a fall leaf cut out as a creative fall photo shoot idea
If you’re looking for a creative way to incorporate them into your photos, why not try using a leaf cut-out?
To make your own leaf cut-out, simply trace the outline of a large leaf onto a piece of cardstock.
- Cut out the shape, then use it as a template to trace and cut out additional leaves in different colors.
- Once you’ve got your leaf cut-outs, it’s time to start playing around with them!
- You can use them as props in your photos, or even create a leaf garland or mobile.
The picture shown here was done using Canva Pro. The leaf cut-out was added digitally. You can also use PhotoShop or Picsart (phone app) to achieve similar results. You can also add a leaf skirt, or a leaf crown using this method!
Pro tip: If you’re feeling really creative, you can even use your leaf cut-outs to create a fall-themed piece of art. Simply arrange them on a canvas or piece of paper in a pleasing design, then frame or hang them up for all to enjoy.
Mountain views & fall vibes (fall photoshoot with a subject)
Mountain backdrops are incredibly popular for fall photoshoots. After all, what could be more picturesque than a sea of colorful leaves against a backdrop of snow-capped peaks?
When planning a mountain photoshoot, grab some props to increase the fall foliage meter. It can be a few pumpkins or other fall decorations.
Or wear a nice felt hat and scarf and sit on a fall-y ground!
Capturing a city in the fall (fall photoshoot with or without a subject)
There’s something special about a city in the fall. The leaves change color, the air gets crisp, and the streets are full of people enjoying the season.
If you’re lucky enough to live in a city with beautiful fall colors, be sure to take advantage of it! Grab your camera and head out into the streets to capture the beauty of the season.
One of the best things about fall photos is that you don’t need to go far to find a great location. Just about anywhere in the city will likely have some beautiful fall colors, so get creative and explore.
If you’re looking for something a little more specific, try heading to a park or nature preserve. These areas are typically full of trees, making them a perfect spot for capturing fall foliage.
Larches and fall photoshoots (where larches can be found)
Larches are a type of tree that is known for their beautiful golden needles, making them the perfect subject for a fall photoshoot.
They are very very seasonal, and the time frame to capture them is around 2 weeks, so do plan for a fall getaway in advance to avoid disappointment!
As you’re taking pictures, pay attention to the light and the angle of the sun. Once you’ve got your shots, be sure to edit them carefully. Highlight the golden needles by increasing the contrast and saturation!

Go on a fall road trip, and capture its vibes
Fall is the perfect time for a road trip! Not only are the leaves beautiful, but the weather is usually cooler, making it more comfortable for long drives.
When planning a fall road trip photoshoot, be sure to map out your route in advance. This will help you plan for stops along the way, as well as give you an idea of the best times to take photos.
As you’re driving, keep your camera handy so you can capture the beautiful fall scenery outside.
If you see a particularly scenic spot, pull over and take a few minutes to snap some photos. Just be sure to obey all traffic laws and use caution when stopped on the side of the road.
When you reach your destination, take some time to explore and find the best photo spots. Once you’ve got your shots, hit the road and enjoy the rest of your journey!
Strike a pose with fall floral displays
If you’re looking to add some fall flair to your photos, why not strike a pose with an autumnal display of flowers? It’s a great way to show off your outfit and add some extra color to your photos.
When posing with flowers, be sure to choose ones that compliment your outfit.
- If you’re wearing a lot of earth tones, opt for muted colors like white or cream.
- If your outfit is more colorful, go for brighter blooms like orange or yellow
- Or choose black, and let the fall-themed floral displays do the talking!
And don’t forget to experiment with different angles and positions. Standing in front of the flowers is always nice, but you can also get creative and try posing next to them, underneath them, or even laying down among them.
All about the pumpkin spice
What’s fall without a little pumpkin spice? Incorporate this popular flavor into your shoot by featuring seasonal treats like pumpkin pie, lattes, and cookies.
In North America, Starbucks PSL is a popular fall staple. Use it as a subject and position it against a fall backdrop like a decorative wall, foliage, an empty road, etc.
Bring out your inner child at a Sunflower Farm
Sunflower fields are a popular destination during the summer months, but did you know they make for an amazing fall photoshoot location as well?
In some destinations, sunflowers are in full bloom until mid-September (which is the beginning of the fall season).
So take a look at the bloom calendar and make a trip for a photoshoot. As the leaves start to change color, the sunflowers will still be in full bloom, making for a beautiful contrast.
When planning your sunflower field photoshoot, be sure to consider the time of day and the lighting conditions. Avoid midday or noon hours when the sunlight is strong and harsh.
Once you’ve got your timing sorted out, now think of props and poses!
- Use sunflowers as a prop (play peek a boo)
- Or smell the sunflowers
- Pick a bunch
- Dress to the occasion with a pretty hat and a straw bag
Bringing your significant other for family photos in the fall
Fall family photos are a great way to capture the season’s beauty, and they’re even better when you include your significant other. Not only will they add some extra personality to the photos, but it’s also a great way to show off your family’s love and unity.
When planning fall family photos with your significant other, be sure to coordinate your outfits in advance. This will help you avoid any clashes and ensure that everyone looks their best.
Visiting a vineyard in the fall
A vineyard is a great place to visit any time of year, but it’s especially beautiful in the fall. The leaves are changing color, and the grapes are ripe and ready for harvest.
Wine tasting estates will have wooden barrels, log placements, and picnic tables that work very well for a fall photoshoot!
When planning a visit to a vineyard, be sure to check out their website in advance. Many vineyards offer tours and tastings, and some may even have special events happening during the fall season.
When you arrive, take some time to explore the grounds and find the best photo spots. The vineyards are usually full of beautiful scenery, so you’re sure to find some great places to take photos.
Fall is off-season in most popular destinations (like Tuscany Italy), so use this time to your advantage!
Fall decorations at home (or elsewhere indoors)
There’s nothing like spending a cozy fall day indoors. Capture the comfort of autumn by photographing your subject in their own home, surrounded by all their favorite things.
You can also do a nice little flat lay, show your coffee mug/hands, or feet with woolen socks – all of them are great and easy fall lifestyle shots!
Plan a fall break in a rustic cabin lodge
There’s something about spending time in a cabin that just feels so cozy and charming. Maybe it’s the rustic setting, or maybe it’s the feeling of being away from it all. Either way, a cabin is a perfect place to spend a fall break.
The cabins/lodge can be the perfect fall backdrop (where foliage is hard to come by). Wear your best (bright) sweater and look all pretty!
Tip: If you’re planning a cabin getaway, be sure to check out the area in advance. Many cabins are located in beautiful scenic areas, so you’ll want to find one that’s close to all the best photo spots.
Embrace fall vibes in an apple orchard
One of the best things about fall is all the delicious apples that are in season, so why not incorporate them into your photoshoot? An apple orchard makes for a beautiful and festive setting, and there are endless possibilities when it comes to props and themes.
You can throw an apple in the air, go apple picking, capture a basket full of apples or say ‘cheers’ with a glass of apple cider!
For a rustic vibe, try incorporating some hay bales or barrels into your photos. You can also add some fall foliage or pumpkins to make it more seasonal. Or do a little picnic!
And wear a plaid scarf to complete your look!
If you’re going for a more whimsical look, try using apples as props in creative ways. You can spell out words, stack them into towers, or even use them as hats.
No matter how you choose to style it, an apple orchard photoshoot is a great way to capture the essence of fall. Just be sure to bring along a few snacks, because we all know how tempting those apples can be!
Bring on the Halloween fun
If you’re looking for a festive twist, why not incorporate some Halloween props and decorations into your shoot? Think jack-o-lanterns, spiderwebs, and witches’ hats.
