The modern NBA is often characterized as positionless. One could argue that the characterization isn’t entirely accurate. Of course, players’ responsibilities don’t strictly correspond with their position the way that they used to, but each player is still assigned a position.
The real question is, which position rules the league?
Some fans will tell you it’s a guard’s league. To be sure, the league is littered with guards whose team is built around them. At the same time, the MVP voters in 2021-22 didn’t seem to share that sentiment.
After all, not only was the MVP winner (Nikola Jokic) a big man, but the runner-up was as well (Joel Embiid). So, it’s a big man’s league, right?
Not so fast. Realistically, wings dominate the league in terms of quantity. We haven’t ran the numbers, but if you ranked the league’s top 100 players by trade value, we’re willing to be wings would make up the highest percentage.
