Iran’s attack on Kurdish areas of Iraq amid fierce movement against Hijab

In Iran, the protests continued after the death of Kurdish girl Mahsa Amini in police custody for not wearing a hijab. The Iranian government has come under pressure due to fierce protests by protesters across the country.

Meanwhile, the Iranian Revolutionary Guard launched another drone strike on Wednesday targeting Kurds in northern Iraq. At least nine people were killed and 28 were injured. These attacks are believed to be a response to the ongoing protests in Iran.

The Iranian Paramilitary Revolutionary Guard had earlier carried out attacks in Kurdish areas on Saturday and Monday as well. The Revolutionary Guard has attacked 10 Kurdish targets near Sulaimaniya.

At the same time, Iran’s state-run Irna News Agency says that the Revolutionary Guard carried out missiles and suicide drone attacks targeting a separatist group in northern Iraq. AP News quoted Soran Nouri, a member of the Democratic Party of Iranian Kurdistan, as saying that the attack targeted Koya, 60 km from Irbil, on Wednesday.

Iran deployed anti-riot police on the main squares of Tehran on Wednesday in view of the pressure of the protesters. At the same time, the video of Iranian woman Hadith Najafi standing fearlessly in front of the police during the movement is being widely circulated on the Internet media. The police had shot this girl with bullets.

Similarly, the protesters are protesting in different ways. A young woman climbs on top of a car in Mashhad, an Iranian city famous for Islamic shrines. After she takes off her headscarf, she starts shouting slogans, ‘Death to the dictator’, joined by the surrounding protesters and the horns of cars in support.

Iran should avoid unnecessary strictness on protesters

According to Guterres AP News, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said on Wednesday that the Iranian government should refrain from undue harshness on the protesters. Guterres said through a spokesman that authorities should conduct an impartial investigation into the death of 22-year-old Mahsa Amini, which has sparked unrest in Iran’s provinces and the capital of Tehran.

Antonio Guterres said, “We are all concerned about the reports of increasing deaths, including women and children, related to the protests.” It is noteworthy that so far 41 people have died during the protests spread across 31 states and 80 cities.
