C’est la dernière inconnue des Nobel scientifiques 2022: le prix de chimie est attribué mercredi. Parmi les pronostics, des pionnières de la chimie “bioorthogonale” et des tissus humains artificiels, à moins d’une deuxième chance pour les vaccins à ARN messager.

Le prix est annoncé à 11H45 (09H45 GMT) par l’Académie suédoise des Sciences à Stockholm, avant les très attendues récompenses de littérature jeudi et de la paix vendredi, puis le plus récent prix d’économie lundi.

Qui pour succéder à l’Allemand Benjamin List et au Britannique David Macmillan? Les deux hommes avaient été sacrés l’an dernier en chimie pour avoir inventé un nouveau type de catalyseurs pour fabriquer de nouvelles molécules, à moindre coût et de façon plus propre.

Après un millésime 2021 très masculin (12 hommes et une femme, aucune pour les prix scientifiques), l’année 2022 a continué sur cette tendance, avec les Nobels du Suédois Svante Päabo en médecine et d’Alain Aspect (France), John Clauser (Etats-Unis) et Anton Zeilinger (Autriche) en physique.

Une chimiste figurera-t-elle au palmarès cette année? L’Américaine Carolyn Bertozzi, pionnière de la “chimie bioorthogonale” et professeure à l’unversité de Stanford, est régulièrement citée ces dernières années.

David Pendlebury, qui tient une liste de Nobélisables en sciences pour l’institut Clarivate, en fait sa favorite cette année, possiblement en duo avec son compatriote Stephen Lippard.

La chimie bioorthogonale, terme inventé par Mme Bertozzi, est une sorte de “réaction chimique que vous pouvez initier et observer dans un organisme vivant, mais sans perturber ou changer sa nature chimique”, décrypte l’expert.

Les travaux de Lippard se concentrent eux sur l’action des ions métalliques en biochimie, avec des applications notamment en chimiothérapie contre le cancer.

– Deux Nobel pour un Américain? –

Une autre femme pourrait être récompensée si le comité Nobel se risque à sacrer une découverte aux applications encore très récentes: les vaccins à ARN messager, injectés à des centaines et des centaines de millions de personnes pour combattre la pandémie de Covid-19.

A l’origine de cette avancée, la Hongro-Américaine Katalin Kariko et son acolyte américain Drew Weissman sont souvent cités par les pronostiqueurs pour le prix de médecine ou de chimie.

Mais les comités Nobel sont réputés très conservateurs. Ils “ont tendance à attendre longtemps avant de décerner un prix”, souligne Linus Brohult, responsable du service scientifique de la télévision suédoise SVT.

D’autant qu’avec d’autres applications à l’étude contre d’autres maladies, “le vaccin à ARN messager sera peut-être quelque chose d’encore plus grand dans quelques années”, plaide l’expert.

Toujours à la frontière entre médecine et chimie, un autre domaine pourrait être sacré, selon lui et d’autres experts: celui des tissus synthétiques ou de la médecine regénératives avec ces os, peaux, cartilages ou veines semi-artificiels.

En la matière, les noms de l’Américaine Kristi Anseth et de ses compatriotes Cato Laurencin et Robert Langer circulent depuis plusieurs années.

La professeure sino-américaine de génie chimique Zhenan Bao, spécialiste des peaux artificielles incorporant des circuits électroniques, est apparue cette année sur la liste des spéculations.

Un autre choix possible serait l’Américaine Bonnie Bassler, experte de la communication chimique des bactéries.

A moins que le comité ne prenne la décision retentissante de désigner l’Américain Barry Sharpless, pionnier de la “chimie clic” – une nouvelle forme de combinaison de molécules – dont ce serait le deuxième Nobel de chimie, après un premier sacre en 2001 pour une autre découverte.

Seules quatre personnes ont réalisé cet exploit dans l’histoire des prix voulus par l’inventeur suédois Alfred Nobel.

A moins que le comité ne penche pour les réseaux métallo-organiques, plus connus sous leur terme anglais de “metal–organic framework”, une nouvelle classe de matériaux poreux. Les Japonais Makoto Fujista et Susumu Kitagawa, ainsi qu’Omar Yaghi, né en Jordanie mais basé aux Etats-Unis, font figures de pionniers en la matière.

Comme les autres Nobel, le prix de Chimie est doté de 10 millions de couronnes (environ 920.000 euros), à partager éventuellement en cas de colauréats.
