Drivers are being tested to the limit at Mount Panorama, with six incidents so far requiring the safety car at the Bathurst 1000.
A number of cars are already out of the race and although the track is drying out, there are still plenty of near-misses and contacts as drivers go for openings.

Bathurst lunches
You’re doing a great job, Simon. What is everyone having for their Bathurst snacks/Lunch?
– Grant
It is about that time of the race when my mind turns to food.
So far I’ve had a packet of salt and vinegar chips, but I hope that others have had a more tasty lunch options.
Of course, I’m dining on the sheer adrenaline of this race and need nothing else…

It’s been an eventful race
Fox Sports tells us that 22 out of 28 cars have either been off track or been involved in some sort of incident.
It’s been that sort of race.

Car 56 Jake Kostecki gets a 15 second time penalty
He’ll have to serve that at the end of his next green flag pit stop.

Lap 61: Greg Murphy spins but recovers
Greg Murphy got a bit of a nudge from Jake Kostecki on the apex of turn two and spun 180 to face the wrong away, but recovered nicely in a haze of tyre smoke to get back underway.

Lap 61
Garth Tander and David Russell are on a tear, they’ve built a two-second lead.
The rest of the pack though is nose to tail and all looking for an opportunity to pass.

Lap 60: We’re back racing
The big winner in that safety car period? The number 97 Holden, currently piloted by Garth Tander.
They’re back into the lead of this race.
There’s only one Ford in the top seven (Anton de Pasquale) and just two (Pasquale and Lee Holdsworth) in the top 15.
1. #97 -Shane van Gisbergen/Garth Tander
2. #99 – Brodie Kostecki/David Russell
3. #100 – Anton De Pasquale/Tony D’Alberto
4. #2 – Nick Percat/Warren Luff
5. #18 – Mark Winterbottom/Michael Caruso

Lap 57: Safety car! Macauley Jones is off!
This is the sixth safety car of the day, 104 laps remaining in the race.
Jones looked like he just got a bit out of shape heading towards the pits and got dumped into the sand and mud there.
Everyone who needs to will fly into the pits.
The reason cars take the chance to go into the pits when the safety car comes out is because it takes about 32 seconds to negotiate the pit lane.
When the cars are going at full pace, that means cars lose a lot of ground by going into the pits, which is minimised by doing so under the slower conditions behind the safety car.
Cars have about 23 laps worth of fuel in each tank, so that plays into when cars can dive into the pits as well, but they’ve been well spaced over the last hour or so.

Lap 55: Shane van Gisbergen into the pits
The window is open for a brake change.
Every car has to do a full brake change as part of their seven compulsory stops.
Van Gisbergen and Red Bull was just complaining about some oil smell in the car, but he’s going nicely, with a lead of over 8 seconds at the time of his stop.
He’s in, Garth Tanger leaps into the car, anf they rejoin in 18th spot.

Lap 54: Battle for fifth
Wow, HUGE moment for Bryce Fullwood in fifth spot.
He got a bit of a touch from Anton De Pasquale, who he is frantically defending from, along with Chaz Mostert.
Mostert is getting very, very frustrated but it’s a tremendous battle.
First De Pasquale, the Mostert gets by.

Lap 52
Dare I say it? Things are relatively quiet out there at the moment.
1. #97 –Shane van Gisbergen/Garth Tander
2. #20 – Scott Pye/Tyler Everingham +5.6
3. #2 – Nick Percat/Warren Luff +1.5
4. #99 – Brodie Kostecki/David Russell +5.0
5. #14 – Bryce Fullwood/Dean Fiore +0.5
Van Gisbergen has a five second grid penalty to serve at his next green-flag pit stop, so he can theoretically serve that and still come out on top.

Lap 51: Damage to the number 34
There’s a bit of damage to Aaron Seaton’s Holden Commodore, so expect the magic tape to come back out at the next stop.

Lap 49: Broc Feeney slides off at the chase!
He’s managed to rejoin successfully though after surfing through the mud at the bottom of the chase.

Lap 49
It’s tight in the midfield, but the top five are stretching out a little bit at the front.
1. #97 –Shane van Gisbergen/Garth Tander
2. #20 – Scott Pye/Tyler Everingham +3.4
3. #2 – Nick Percat/Warren Luff +1.9
4. #14 – Bryce Fullwood/Dean Fiore +2.5
5. #96 – Macauley Jones/Jordan Boys +1.7

Lap 46: James Moffat spins!
There was some contact from Brodie Kostecki to facilitate the spin, it could have been a disaster.
It was the battle for sixth, and now Moffat is in 21st.
It could have been so much worse though, he managed to avoid hitting any of the concrete up there in the cutting.
Moffat has not had a great day so far, his start was woeful and now he’s spun during his second stint – it’s really hampering his and Cam Waters‘ race.

Lap 43: Under safety car conditions
Most of the lead cars dive into the pits.
Shane van Gisbergen will lead the race though because he hasn’t.
There’s still 120-odd laps to go, so strategy is a bit al over the place at the moment. There’s still a lot of things that could happen in this race after all.
Here’s your top five as things stand ahead of the restart.
1. #97 –Shane van Gisbergen/Garth Tander
2. #20 – Scott Pye/Tyler Everingham
3. #14 – Bryce Fullwood/Dean Fiore
4. #2 – Nick Percat/Warren Luff
5. #96 – Macauley Jones/Jordan Boys
