Exiled Ugandan novelist Kakwenza Rukirabashaija has finally been reunited with his wife Eva Basiima and children in Germany months after he fled the country.
Kakwenza managed to silently sneak his wife and children through Kenya, where they stayed for over two weeks before flying into Germany on October 6.
Speaking to TUKO.co.ke’s Linda shiundu, the award-winning author, said even though his plan was a secret, Ugandan authorities got wind of his family’s movement.
“They were held in Busia town for over three hours before they were released unconditionally,’ he explained.

Accordung to him, his family was released unconditionally, probably because the authorities feared being embarrassed in case he had to make noise about it.
Even though his family was supposed to stay in Kenya for only three days, they encountered more challenges that saw them extend their stay before Immigration officials in Kenya helped them.
In a different interview, Kakwenza stated that his young family was subjected to “state-inspired surveillance”, which informed his decision to evacuate them quietly.
“Very true. My wife was facing state inspired surveillance. Had been attacked twice at home, dogs poisoned and CCTV cameras plucked off. So I had to evacuate them silently,” he said.
In June this year, the exiled novelist petitioned the Uganda Human Rights Commission (UHRC) over what he called a continued violation of the right to a passport for his children.

In his petition, Kakwenza, through his lawyers of Kiiza and Mugisha Advocates, said that his three children had been denied their constitutional right to own a passport by Ugandan immigration officials.
Immigration officials later said that Kakwenza’s claims were false, saying that the delay was caused by a faulty machine operating below its capacity at the time.
