According to information on the Marie Stopes Kenya website, a vasectomy is a contraceptive method suitable for men who are sure they do not want any more children.
“It’s a popular method of family planning chosen by millions of men worldwide. It’s safe, effective and offers a permanent solution to contraceptive needs,” Marie Stopes says.
Vasectomy procedure
The surgical procedure takes about 15 minutes at the facility’s branches in Kenya.
“The procedure takes about 15 minutes, and is one of the most effective methods of contraception that exists – the failure rate is approximately 1 man in 2000.”

Some questions from curious Kenyans followed the social media post by the health facility, and it took time to answer all of them.
Tall Man asked:
“In 2004, doctors wouldn’t perform a vasectomy on unmarried men, married without kids or if a wife would not consent to her man’s decision. How about Marie Stopes?
Marie Stopes Kenya responded by saying any person undergoing a permanent procedure like BTL or vasectomy has to undergo an eligibility assessment as per World Health Organisation (WHO).
The assessment includes the risk of regret as a long-term consequence and complication.
“The eligibility assessment looks at many parameters. So, every client must be assessed as an individual, and a consensus must be reached on his or her eligibility with the doctor,” it said.

Kenyans had earlier expressed mixed opinions about considering vasectomy as a family planning option.

Many men swore never to try it, saying they would rather have more kids than even consider it. However, some women also advised men who were considering the method.
And in July 2021, DJ Moz revealed he opted for a vasectomy because other contraceptive methods affected his wife.
During a discussion on contraceptives alongside hypeman DNG and other panellists, the father of three said the side effects pills had on his wife informed his decision.
According to Moz, he did not like using protection, and his wife bore the burden of family planning.
