Romania is on its way to getting its first fully electric trains, Romania Insider reports. The machines were manufactured by Alstom and will be put into operation by the end of this year. The investment exceeds €350 million and is one of the largest projects in the Romanian railways.
Speed up to 160 km/h
The all-electric trains are designed to travel long distances and will be designed for the major routes, such as Bukurešt-Krayova-Timişoara-Arad. The railway line is now electrified, which allows the new machines to reach the border between Romania and Hungary quickly.
Stephen Pozany stated that the tests will start during the summer and that the trains will run at a maximum speed of 160 km/h. Not all railway stations allow this call yet. The Bukurešt-Constanța lines, for example, or the railway lines between Brašov and Predyal will allow more passengers, because they have been modernized. In the positive parts, the trains will move at a lower speed. All in all, the main lines are designed for movement at 120 km/h.
The head of the Romanian State Railways announced that one Alstrom electric train costs over €9 million and that the total investment amounts to a little over €350 million.
The blocks are protected by the latest global standards, have modern toilets and will have the destination for camping.
About 100 km of renovated railway line is expected to be put into operation this year, which will also allow trains to run at a speed of 160 km/h.
To put it bluntly, the total cost of the Romanian trains at the moment is far lower than that of the machines in Western Europe. A passenger train moves at a speed of 40-50 km/h.
