Firing back at the bowler when you’ve had your stumps rattled rarely works.
White Ferns batter-wicketkeeper Katey Martin might later reflect on that and take some ‘learnings’ after her run-in with South African pace bowler Shabnim Ismail.
In a crucial women’s cricket World Cup game in Hamilton on Thursday, Ismail bowled Martin and celebrated raucously, with a bold hint as to where Martin could now head to.
As Martin turned to walk off, she made a circular motion with her gloved hand near her helmet as she eyed the South African pocket-rocket.
Unsurprisingly, Ismail wasn’t impressed and glowered as Martin made her way off the field, having contributed nine runs off eight balls as New Zealand’s innings fell away late in the day-night game.
New Zealand, desperately needing a win over the unbeaten visitors to improve their chances of making the semifinals, were bowled out for 228 in the 48th over after being 168-3 in the 36th over, with Ismail taking 3-27 off nine overs.
