MANHEIM, Pa. — The National Wrestling Coaches Association announced earlier this week the full slate of 2021-22 Scholar All-America Team and Individual honorees for the NJCAA men’s division with awards going to 73 individuals representing 22 institutions.
“On behalf of the NWCA Board of Directors, It is my honor to recognize these exceptional athletes and teams,” NWCA Executive Director Mike Moyer said. “Wrestling takes much focus and sacrifice and we are proud to honor these wrestlers for their obvious commitment to their academic pursuits.”
Of the 22 institutions that had representation and of the 51 schools that sponsor wrestling, the Jamestown Community College wrestling team finished fourth overall with a 3.093 grade-point average, edging out Indian Hills CC by .001.
Earning Scholar All-America honors for the Jayhawks were 133-pounder Brendon Ramsey (Panama/Panama Central), 157-pounder Andrew Bungar (Hermitage, Pennsylvania/Hickory), 174-pounder Ross Abram (Eden/Eden) and 197-pounder Brock Johnson (Falconer/Falconer ).
“I’m very proud of our four Scholar All-Americans,” said head coach Kris Schimek. “I am also very proud of the hard work the guys put into finishing fourth in the country academically. Their hard work speaks to the culture that we have created here, that school comes first for it is their future. Ramsey, Bungar, Abram, and Johnson should all be proud of this honor, as it is a testament to their hard work, on and off the mat.”
Ramsey, a physical education major, finished his freshman season with a 9-15 overall record. His season was highlighted by earning medalist honors at the Thunderwolves Open and qualifying for the 2022 NJCAA Wrestling National Championship.
Bungar, an individual studies major, is now a two-time NWCA Scholar All-American who finished his second season as a Jayhawk with a 4-12 overall record. Bungar’s season was highlighted by being the medalist at the Thunderwolves Open and qualifying for the 2022 NJCAA Wrestling National Championship.
Abram, a liberal arts major, finished his second season with an overall record of 20-6. Abram’s accomplishments included: NJCAA Region 3 All-Region Team, NJCAA Northeast District champion, NJCAA Northeast District Most Outstanding Wrestler, and 2022 NJCAA Wrestling National Championship qualifier.
Johnson, a criminal justice major, finished his freshman season with a 14-13 overall record. His season highlights included: NJCAA Region 3 All-Region Team, NJCAA Northeast District champion, and 2022 NJCAA Wrestling National Championship qualifier.
