Bonn (dpa) – People in Germany are eating less and less meat. In 2022, around 52 kilograms of meat were consumed per capita, which is 4.2 kilograms less than in the previous year, reports the Federal Information Centre for Agriculture (BZL). The fall has thus roughly doubled compared with 2021. The decline was particularly pronounced in the case of pork consumption, which decreased by 2.8 kilos per capita. Over the past ten years, meat consumption has dropped by just under nine kilograms. Sales of plant-based meat and dairy alternatives have meanwhile risen by eleven percent to reach 1.91 billion euros in 2022. Germany is by far the largest market for plant-based foods in Europe, with sales nearly twice as high as in second-placed Great Britain, reports the Good Food Institute (GFI).
