Manchester City are reportedly interested in a bombshell move to sign Paul Pogba on a free transfer this summer.
In a move that would send shockwaves from Manchester through European football, City could swoop for the wantaway United star.
Pogba is set to leave Old Trafford for nothing for the second time when his contract winds down at the end of the season, and City are exploring the option of signing him.
In a move that would mirror Carlos Tevez’s infamous switch from United to City in 2009, the Daily Mail reports Pep Guardiola wants a versatile midfielder to fill the void left by Fernandinho, who has already confirmed his departure.
The report states out-of-contract Pogba is among those named on a shortlist of potential replacements, however City cannot make a formal offer to the France international until the end of the season.
Transfer regulations state that clubs within the same country cannot make a formal offer during the season, putting City at a disadvantage to clubs overseas, who can open negotiations reach a pre-contract agreement before the summer.
It is understood the biggest obstacle would be convincing Pogba to cross the divide in Manchester, however the 29-year-old would not immediately dismiss the prospect of joining City.
It is claimed Pogba would consider the option just as he would all the other offers he has received, with Paris Saint-Germain and Juventus also interested in signing him.
Should the move to the Etihad materialise, it would be one of the most controversial free transfers in football history.
Pogba rejoined Manchester United on a then-world record €100 million deal from Juventus in 2016, and is virtually guaranteed to leave Old Trafford for nothing for the second time, exactly a decade after his first departure in 2012.
