Berlin (dpa) – On 1 May, Germany will be introducing a ticket for local public transport that will cost 49 euros and be valid nationwide. The ticket will be sold by most regional transport operators, as well as by the national rail operator Deutsche Bahn.
The Deutschlandticket (Germany ticket) will be valid on all local and regional public buses and trains, as was the case with the 9-euro ticket in the summer of 2022. ICE, IC and EC trains will therefore be excluded, as will private coaches. The ticket will also not apply on ships, except for connections that form part of local public transport, such as the ferries in Hamburg or across Lake Wannsee in Berlin.
The Deutschlandticket will in each case be valid for the current calendar month. In other words, anyone who decides only to purchase the ticket on 15 May will still have to pay the full 49 euros for the period until 31 May.
The Deutschlandticket is intended as a subscription service. So the ticket will renew automatically for the next month unless the subscription is cancelled. However, the ticket can always be cancelled at the end of each month.
At the launch of the ticket, Germany’s Transport Minister Volker Wissing talked of it being the “biggest reform of local public transport fares ever in the history of the Federal Republic of Germany”. The new offer is designed to ease the financial burden on people and persuade them to use buses and trains more frequently – thus making travel more climate-friendly.
