Wiesbaden (dpa) – As a result of the Russian war of aggression against Ukraine, far more people came to Germany in 2022 than moved away. At around 1.46 million, the migration surplus was higher than at any time since records began in 1950, the Federal Statistical Office reported. This was mainly due to refugees from Ukraine. About 1.1 million people came to Germany from Ukraine last year, while 138,000 moved away, according to the data.
Records show that there were a total of some 2.67 million immigrants and 1.2 million emigrants. In the previous year, there were 1.32 million immigrants and 994,000 emigrants, the Federal Statistical Office reports. According to the statistics, there were also significant increases in net immigration from Syria, with a total of 68,000 immigrants arriving in Germany, as well as from Afghanistan (55,000) and Turkey (49,000). Immigration from the EU has increased moderately. People from Romania, Poland and Bulgaria in particular were drawn to Germany.
