I have said a lot on Mount in the last six months, and the whole saga and drama around the situation has literally left me feeling numb with emotions. When I finally heard the confirmation that he is joining Manchester United, I didn’t feel anything at all, and I put that all down to how this saga has unfolded, and how it has been handled by all sides. It’s simply sucked the life out of me.
I don’t hate Mount, far from it. But my emotions have been levelled completely flat for the whole thing now, and I literally went past the point of caring some weeks back.
The thing that annoys me so much here is that quite simply, none of us will ever truly know what happened and why it broke down, because all we saw here was immense PR from either side, and THAT is what ended up making me the angriest in all this. Is some transparency too much to ask for as fans who pay their hard-earned money to support a club and players? I don’t think it is. But we have consistently heard complete opposite ends of the story from either side, and that is what has exhausted and angered me this, more than anything else.
Liam Twomey from The Athletic pretty much summed up my thoughts with a simple tweet last night.
He said:
“Chelsea ownership (both old and new) made mistakes with Mount’s contract situation over the past two years, but Mount also wanted the United move and pushed for it. All parties made decisions that led to this outcome.”
The goodbye message from Mount did annoy me. It was so flat, mono-tone, and absolutely scripted. It was also filmed some weeks back. There is no thought, no care, no nothing, and unfortunately it has also now seen the majority of the Chelsea fan base completely turn on him. Is that what you really wanted here, Mason? I’m sad that it is ending that way. Not for me personally, because like I said, I literally could not care less anymore – Chelsea is bigger than any player, manager or owner and always will be – but it’s sad to see his relations with fans completely crumble, because many were still having his back even as recently as yesterday. But not anymore.
It’s clear that Mount in the end was pushing for the move, it’s clear to see that now. But things happened before that to get him to that point, and it is also important to remember that. I see anger directed at Mount and I feel that it is simply media PR that has made people get to that level of anger. All I want to do is encourage balance on that.
You can be upset, of course you can, but just remember there are always two sides to a story, sometimes even more than two sides. Things happened here that we will probably never know about, and things that haven’t sat well with me. It’s all been handled atrociously and without honesty. For that, it feels like a bit of a smack in the face.
We also must remember that Mount has suffered years of abuse from some absolute weirdos in this ‘fan base’ and these are things that he saw on a daily basis and forced him to close his Twitter account. He should never have had to deal with all of that, and maybe that also played a part in his decision. Although saying that, every fan base has it’s idiots and I am sure he will experience similar at Manchester United unfortunately.
The Mount story should never have ended like this. He was not far past his toddler stage in life when he joined our club, it should never have been like this.
But even still, these are my last words on Mount. I wish him well on a personal level, and I wish his family well (Tony Mount was kind enough to give us his time on a Podcast and has always been kind enough to engage with me on Twitter etc). So for all of that, I thank them all, and I thank Mason for his contributions in a Chelsea shirt and for the good memories we all shared together, and there were some great ones.
But Mason has now chosen to join a direct rival of Chelsea’s, so now he is United, and I do not like United. We are now rivals, the Chelsea story is over. Goodbye, Mason.
