Don White and Roy (Wanganui), guiding their sheep through ‘Maltese cross’ were eventually placed fourth.
The sheep proved stroppy on the first day of the annual Taranaki indoor sheepdog trial in Hāwera, but proved more co-operative on the next two days.
Taranaki had two men in the final; Steve Murphy and Edge from Whangamomona, who finished 8th, and Bernie Gower with Jack from New Plymouth, who came 10th, club secretary Brenda O’Leary said.
The Wanganui Centre was well represented by Don White and Roy from Mataroa, who were 4th, and Ian Burling with Jay from Turakina, who was 6th.
Masterton’s Vaughan Marfell and Shine took out the top prize and the Bruce Harvey Memorial Trophy with a score of 98.25.
Jim Wilson from Hawke’s Bay and his intermediate dog Cap were second with 97.7points and another Hawke’s Bay combination, Laurie Horsefall with Thor was 3rd on 97.5pts.
Little separated the top dogs, O’Leary said.
There were 225 dogs and their owners from all around the North Island, a record number for the annual event sponsored by Mighty Mix, which was held in the TSB Stadium at the Egmont A and P Showgrounds.
This year the club donated $3000 to Hato Hone St John Hāwera.
With just one judge presiding, previous winner of the event Leo Jecentho from Waikato, it meant 12-hour long days for him and scribes Janeen Riley and Sharon Wright.
Eighty-eight maiden dogs competed in the qualifying rounds.
Jecentho was impressed with the standard and the way the young dogs performed, particularly in the hands of the maiden men and women.
All 15 finalists in the Sunday runoff completed the course.
