Vilnius (dpa) – Germany’s Chancellor Olaf Scholz sees the G7 pledges to support Ukraine as strengthening military assistance for the country, also in the long term. At a NATO summit in the Lithuanian capital Vilnius, Scholz said that this was about a “security partnership” embedded in a longer-term strategy “that Ukraine can rely on”. He added that this tied in with the help provided so far, which has enabled Ukraine to defend itself in a way that it would not have had the economic resources to do on its own.
The G7 group of Western economic powers plans to better protect Ukraine with long-term military and financial assistance for as long as it is not yet a NATO member. Among other things, the USA, Germany and five other G7 states are offering the country the prospect of modern equipment for its air and naval forces. A declaration to this effect was signed at the end of the NATO summit.
German Chancellor Scholz also said he was convinced that the top-level meeting in Lithuania had also formulated a clear response to the Russian war of aggression against Ukraine. “For it has strengthened NATO, underlined our willingness to defend ourselves, and increased cohesion within the alliance,” said the chancellor. In addition, he stressed: “NATO is a defence alliance that threatens no one. However, it is ready and able to counter any military threat.”
