Berlin (dpa) – Following the military coup in Niger, Germany’s Federal Government is suspending further aid to the West African country. The bilateral development cooperation was suspended on Monday following a temporary stop to all direct support payments to the central government in Niamey. Government departments in Berlin are acting in political consensus with EU partners, the African Union and the Ecowas union of West African states to return the democratically elected president Mohamed Bazoum to office.
A spokesperson for the Federal Foreign Office made it plain it was premature to believe that the coup had been successful. He added that, “As such, I believe a great many things are still in flux and that there is certainly still a chance that the coup will fail.”
On Wednesday officers from General Omar Tchiani’s elite unit arrested the democratically elected president Mohamed Bazoum and declared he had been removed from power. On Friday Tchiani appointed himself as the country’s new ruler. Shortly after Tchiani seized power to become the de-facto president, those involved in the coup suspended the constitution of the West African country and dissolved all constitutional institutions.
