Berlin/Hamburg (dpa) – The Federal Government is prioritising renewable solar and wind energy for the transformation of the electricity system. There are also plans to build new hydrogen and gas power stations as a safety net. Economic Affairs and Climate Action Minister Robert Habeck is planning a power station strategy to create state-backed incentives for these. Habeck and the EU Commission have now taken the first step by agreeing a set of guiding principles for the proposed subsidies and investment cost grants. Habeck spoke of a “political breakthrough” on the way towards carbon-free power stations.
The goal for the Federal Government is for 80% of electricity in Germany to come from renewable sources in 2030. The current figure is slightly over half. Tenders for 8.8 gigawatts of generating power are to be offered to build the new power stations, which will be powered by hydrogen from the very start. Until 2035 the government plans to award contracts for up to 15 gigawatts of hydrogen-fired power stations which can also be powered by gas on a temporary basis.
