On the night he returned from a 1-game suspension, Rockets guard Kevin Porter Jr. hit a Harden-Esque sidestep 3-pointer Wednesday to defeat Bradley Beal’s Washington Wizards.
As Porter Jr. celebrated the buzzer-beater with his teammates, Glenn Consor, a commentator on the Wizards broadcast, thought his shot looked similar to a horrific past event involving Porter Jr’s dad, Bryan Kevin Porter Sr.
“What a well-designed play. You gotta give credit to Kevin Porter Jr., like his dad, pulled that trigger right at the right time. Boy, that one stung.”
Glenn Consor
In 1993, Kevin Porter Jr.’s dad, Bryan Kevin Porter Sr., spent four years in prison on convictions of manslaughter for shooting a 14-year-old girl. Porter Sr. said his semiautomatic weapon fired accidentally as he handed it to the girl during an exchange in his car. Porter Sr. was shot and killed in a Seattle bar eleven years later. Kevin Porter jr. was four years old at the time.
The context of Consor’s comment has sparked controversy on the internet. Fans are outraged, with many people waiting for an apology, while others are expecting a job termination.
“Kevin Porter Jr., like his dad, pulled that trigger right at the right time” I can’t believe this was actually said on the Wizards broadcast.. Completely inexcusable.”
“DUDE WHAT THE F–K (Yes his dad played basketball but… YOU COULDN’T HAVE THOUGHT OF SOMETHING ELSE?!)”
“Get some regulations on these broadcasters lmao”
“This is the craziest thing I’ve ever heard on an NBA broadcast and everyone involved needs to be fired, full stop. It doesn’t get more inappropriate. Holy shit.”
Damn… if that’s not a fireable offense idk what i…just insensitive and flat out uncalled for…
Some fans tried to attach logic to Consor’s analogy, arguing that the commentator could’ve believed Kevin Porter Jr. is the son of former NBA player Kevin Porter.
Kevin Porter played for the Washington Bullets between 1972 and 1983. He was regarded as one of the best passers during his time. However, Kevin Porter is currently 71 years old, making him unlikely to have a 21-year-old son. Nonetheless, the similarity in the name could’ve been a cause of the possible error.
Whatever the case may be, Kevin Porter Jr. followed a week of frustration and suspensions with excitement and joy. Porter Jr. finished with 9 points, 7 rebounds, 8 assists, and 4 steals. He’ll look to carry that momentum into his matchup vs. Luka Doncic and the Mavericks Saturday night.
