Lisa Carrington won the K1 women’s 500m final at the ICF Canoe Sprint & Paracanoe World Championships in Duisburg, Germany.
Lisa Carrington has raced to her fourth K1 women’s 500 world championship gold.
The legendary New Zealand paddler claimed victory in the A final at the ICF Canoe Sprint and Paracanoe world championships in Duisburg, Germany on Saturday night (NZ time).
The defending Olympic and world champion in the class led throughout to win by a length in one minute 47.769 seconds. Denmark’s Emma Jorgensen was second in 1:49.102 with Hungary’s Tamara Csipes claiming bronze.
It was the 34-year-old’s 15th world championship gold, since her first triumph on 2011.
“I was really stoked yesterday with the K4, and awesome to be able to turn up again today and to race like that, especially against some really tough competition.
“It’s been a really good regatta so far, said Carrington, who is also chasing gold in the K1 200.
The previous day, Carrington was part of the Kiwi women’s K4 crew which claimed a historic win in their 500m event.
Six-time Olympics Games medallist Carrington and her young team-mates Alicia Hoskin, Olivia Brett and Tara Vaughan became the first K4 from New Zealand, male or female, to win a world title.
“I’m just so proud of them.” Carrington said. “We’ve worked so hard. This is what teamwork does.”
New Zealand won in a time of 1.30.606, just under a second ahead of Poland in 1.31.320. Spain took home the bronze medal.

The result qualified a New Zealand’s women’s K4 boat for the 2024 Olympics, meaning there will be at least four female kayakers in the NZ team at Paris.
