Berlin (dpa) – Federal Labour Minister Hubertus Heil aims to promote the use of artificial intelligence (AI) for millions of workers in Germany. “In Germany we will try to bring AI onto the streets,” Heil said in Berlin. Heil stressed that by 2035 at the latest there will be no jobs which do not involve using AI applications.
Ever since the ChatGPT chatbot had become a hot topic, Heil said, many people had been asking themselves, “What will that do to my job in journalism, in the office, in the civil service?” However, he expressed his conviction that work would not disappear but would change. “If used well, AI can ensure that the world of work becomes more humane and focused on people’s needs, such as by preventing workplace accidents and ensuring that work is healthy.”
However, the Labour Minister did note the risks, stressing that policymakers cannot close their eyes to the potential for this development to be abused, “such as squeezing jobs, putting people under pressure and monitoring everything they do.” Where there were major risks, Heil said, there was a need for strong rules. Heil also announced plans including the development in partnership with the Federal Ministry of the Interior of key points in data protection for employees.
