Berlin (dpa) – Forging closer economic ties, tapping into raw materials, boosting security and limiting migration. are on the agenda for Federal Chancellor Olaf Scholz’s third major trip to Africa within two years of taking office. Germany’s Federal Chancellor set off on Sunday for a three-day visit to Nigeria and Ghana.
Scholz has pledged to make Africa an even stronger focus of his attention. This is in part due to the lesson Germany has learned from Russia’s invasion of Ukraine about the need for Germany to adopt a broader global stance. Scholz began his visit by travelling to the Nigerian capital Abuja on Sunday morning. His priority there is to deepen the partnership.
Federal Chancellor Olaf Scholz plans to use his visit to Nigeria to promote gas imports from the West African country. “German businesses have an interest in gas supplies from Nigeria and have high hopes of a partnership with Nigerian gas companies,” Scholz said in an interview with the Nigerian newspaper The Punch. Scholz said Germany was prioritising joint initiatives to promote the production of hydrogen as the fuel of the future. Further members of the Federal Government will travel to Africa in the coming days. Federal Minister of the Interior Nancy Faser and the Special Commissioner for the migration agreement Joachim Stamp will travel to Morocco, while Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier is visiting Zambia and Tanzania.
