Police have arrested a 21-year-old Sandton student for the rape and murder of Johannesburg schoolteacher Kirsten Kluyts.
Police said the man was tracked with the help of a security company, 24/7 Security Management.
The man was arrested at a student’s residence at 16:00 on Sunday.
Gauteng’s police commissioner, Lieutenant-General Elias Mawela, commended the detectives who managed to “crack the murder case”.
Kluyts was participating in the weekly MyRun event at the Sandton Sports Club on 29 October when she was attacked, dragged down a bank, raped and murdered.
Concerned runners found her body at 09:30 after she failed to arrive at the finish line at 09:00.
News24 understands the man was able to be tracked because he was seen wearing Kluyts’ blue T-shirt when he exited the sports complex.
The club in Parkmore, Sandton, is surrounded by CCTV cameras, and police used the footage to track the man.
He will appear in the Alexandra Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday.
