Holistic therapy is a different way of looking at health inspired by natural practices in Eastern and Western medicine. National Holistic Therapy Day encourages people to try some of the practices out to see if they could possibly be something that could benefit their daily lives.
Holistic therapy is inspired by the idea that a mutual goal is being set and achieved by the caregiver and the patient by caring for the whole person through their physical, mental, spiritual, and social needs. So, it’s really about what helps make the individual feel better!
“Doctors who take a holistic approach to health don’t just ask you about your symptoms. They ask about you — your overall health and your life — so they can make personalized recommendations to improve your wellness,” according to healthcare company Dignity Health.
“Holistic doctors empower you with the education and motivation to make better choices. Rather than suggesting a long list of lifestyle changes, they include you in the conversation and help you determine which changes would make the greatest impact on your health,” Dignity Health added.
These practices can include an array of different aspects. Here are some examples of how to incorporate holistic health into your life.
Mindful Meditation
This can be done through “mental training practice that teaches you to slow down racing thoughts, let go of negativity, and calm both your mind and body.”
Yoga
Yoga is an ancient practice that involves physical poses, concentration, and deep breathing to connect the mind and the body.
Massage
Massages are an excellent stress reliever through physically releasing tension from the body with different pressures and movements.
Cranial Therapy
“Is a gentle hands-on technique that uses a light touch to examine membranes and movement of the fluids in and around the central nervous system,” according to the Cleveland Clinic.
Aromatherapy
This is the practice of using essential oils for therapeutic benefit.
Sound Therapy
Deep self-reflection techniques to improve health and wellbeing are encouraged through sound, music and specialist instruments played in therapeutic ways.
Breath Work
There are various ways of breathing that can encourage better health. The most common example is “deep breathing.” There is also the “4-7-8” technique, the “4-4-4-4” and the “5-5.”
Acupressure
This is done by applying pressure to certain areas of the body for a physical release.
Acupuncture
Needles are applied to some regions of the body for a similar release to acupressure.
Reiki
Reiki is a non-invasive practice that another performs on a person to help move built-up “energy” through the body and “chakras.”
