The 13-year-old boy was struck by a car while riding his bike at the intersection of Reuss Street and Excelsior Street in Leichhardt, at 8.30pm on Friday.
The driver was allegedly heard swearing just after the impact, before he is accused of driving off, prompting police to launch an appeal to find the person behind the wheel.
A 22-year-old man handed himself into Newtown Police Station around 1.30pm on Saturday, where he was interviewed by police and subsequently charged around 9pm.
The teenager was staying at his friends place nearby when they decided to ride down to the local park, with the incident taking place as they crossed the intersection.
“He looked in pretty bad shape, he was bloodied and saying ‘I don’t want to die’,” one witness told 9News.
Despite the ordeal, the boy is said to be recovering at Randwick Children’s Hospital.
He is in a stable conditions after suffering from a fractured shoulder blade and minor internal bleeding, but is expected to bounce back.
The driver’s been charged with fail to stop and assist after vehicle impact causing grievous bodily harm, and not give particulars to injured person.
The 22-year-old was granted conditional bail and will appear before Downing Centre Local Court at the end of March.
