Los Angeles (dpa) – Big stage for German actress Sandra Hüller at the Oscars: although she missed out on the award for best leading actress, she is the female lead in this year’s best international feature film – The Zone of Interest. Also nominated in this category were Das Lehrerzimmer by Ilker Çatak as the German entry, and the film Perfect Days by German director Wim Wenders for Japan. The big winner at the 96th Oscars was the historical epic Oppenheimer with seven awards.
The British-produced German-language film The Zone of Interest starring Hüller as the wife of Auschwitz commandant Höss (played by fellow German actor Christian Friedel) won in the category Best International Feature Film. Born in Thüringia and resident in Leipzig, Sandra Hüller was also nominated for Best Actress in a Leading Role – something no German has achieved for more than 80 years. In the French legal drama Anatomy of a Fall, she puts in an impressive multilingual portrayal of a writer who has to stand trial for the suspected murder of her husband. However, this award went to Emma Stone for her performance in the grotesque comedy Poor Things.
