Despite an overhaul in electoral law to allow independent candidates to contest the elections, only seven independent candidates qualified to contest for seats in the National Assembly, the Electoral Commission of South Africa (IEC) said on Tuesday.
And, across the nine provincial legislatures, only six independent candidates made it onto the ballot.
For the first time, South Africans will vote on three ballots to ensure independent candidates are catered for after the Constitutional Court ruled that they are allowed to contest the national and provincial elections.
