The Aston Martin Formula 1 team announced that Fernando Alonso will be joining the squad in 2023 on a multi-year deal. The Spaniard is currently racing for Alpine and replaces the outgoing Sebastian Vettel in the British team.
Vettel announced his retirement in the build-up to this past weekend’s Hungarian Grand Prix, ending speculation regarding his future.
Alonso’s future has also been the focus of much speculation, with Alpine in a pressing situation over its 2023 driver line-up. With Esteban Ocon locked in and Alonso’s involvement uncertain, especially with Formula 2 champion Oscar Piastri waiting in the wings, the team has all but confirmed that the youngster would replace Alonso next year.
It’s unclear when Alonso and Aston Martin began negotiations, but the driver will be in the sport until at least the end of the 2024 season – at which point he will be 43-years-old.
This is a developing story.
