Team Nigeria continued to pile up the medals on the 2022 Commonwealth Games Day 4 as they claimed a fourth medal of the Games.
19-year-old weightlifter Islamiyat Adebukola Yusuf claimed Team Nigeria’s fourth medal in weightlifting at this year’s Games when she clinched the bronze medal in the women’s 64kg event. The teenager lifted a total of 212kg in the snatch and clean & jerk events to finish in third place in the category and claim a bronze on her official debut.
The men’s table tennis team fell to a 3-0 thrashing at the hands of their Indian counterparts in the semifinals of the event. Bode Abiodun and Olajide Omotayo lost the doubles event before Aruna Quadri and Omotayo each lost their singles matches to see the Indians through to the final where they will take on Singapore. Nigeria will lock horns with England in the bronze medal match.
In the women’s 71kg weightlifting category, Joy Eze failed to make the podium after failing to complete a single attempt at the clean & jerk. The weightlifter had lifted 100kg in the snatch category and was poised for a silver medal before failing in all her three attempts at the clean & jerk.
In the men’s light heavyweight boxing, Innocent Ehwarieme was handed a beating by England’s Aaron Bowen in their Round of 16 clash, with the English pugilist claiming a 5-0 win on points.
In the men’s 66kg judo event, Edwin Peter lost in his Round of 16 clash against Northern Irishman Nathon Burns.
