Every NBA team would like to be in the running for the NBA title every season. Unfortunately, that’s simply unrealistic.
In any given season, some teams will be on the upswing, and some teams will be on the decline. Young teams will begin to harvest the fruits of their labor. On the other hand, teams who have had the same core for years may consider switching things up if their success has been limited.
In 2021-22, the Cleveland Cavaliers fell into the former camp. Sure, they failed to advance past the play-in tournament, but given the age of their group, getting as close as they did to the playoffs was an accomplishment.
If not for a late-season injury to Jarred Allen, they’d have likely participated.

On the other hand, the Utah Jazz appear to be a team in decline. They were eliminated in the first round of the playoffs this year after making several trips in a row. They already responded to that regression by trading Rudy Gobert.
Could they make further moves by trading Donovan Mitchell? If they did, should the Cavaliers be interested?
