A fatal accident involving several vehicles from President Akufo-Addo’s convoy occurred on the Bunso-Akyem Asafo stretch of the Accra-Kumasi Highway on Sunday, 19th May 2024.
The convoy was returning from Kumasi after a series of events attended by the President.
The unfortunate incident claimed the life of Mr. Kwesi Atta, one of the drivers. Several close protection and police officers from the President’s security detail also sustained injuries of varying degrees.
The injured officers received initial treatment at the Suhum Government Hospital and are currently being evacuated to the University of Ghana Medical Centre for further treatment and observation.
The accident resulted in significant damage to several vehicles in the convoy. However, President Akufo-Addo was unharmed as he had travelled to Accra via military aircraft.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with the family of the deceased, and we wish a speedy recovery to the injured officers,” said Eugene Arhin, Director of Communications at the Office of the President.
He added that further details would be communicated as they continue to assess the situation.
Reports say the convoy was crossed by a KIA Rhino truck, resulting in the crash.
