The US National Weather Service in Paducah confirmed there was a tornado emergency in western Hopkins County and that a catastrophic, life threatening tornado was headed towards the Dawson Springs and Charleston, Kentucky area.
WPSD Chief Meteorologist Trent Okerson is tracking storms live.
With a busy evening ahead for those with Memorial Day plans, anyone with outdoor activities planned should keep a close eye on the radar and alerts. Make sure to have reliable ways to get warnings if outdoors, and know where to take shelter if storms threaten your area. Download the free WPSD Radar app for warnings wherever you are located. If you are headed to the lake or campground, have a NOAA weather radio on hand for a second reliable way to get warnings.
Also, remember that if you can hear thunder, you are close enough for lightning to strike. If a thunderstorm approaches, go inside a sturdy shelter and remain indoors for 30 minutes after the last sound of thunder.
