The State of Palestine has applied to join South Africa’s case against Israel before the International Court of Justice, saying it has a special interest in genocide taking place in its territory.
“The victims of genocide bring their own experiences of it to the interpretation of the Genocide Convention,” it told the ICJ in a filing made public on Monday evening. “Palestine is no exception in this respect.”
Palestine can offer the court “factual elements concerning the genocidal acts of Israel”, and wishes to participate in future hearings on provisional measures, its ambassador Ammar Hijazi told the ICJ.
