Millwall head coach Neil Harris is heading back to his former club Gillingham next month for a pre-season friendly and has revealed that the fixture was sorted prior to his return to The Den in February.
The Lions’ all-time record goalscorer started the 2023-24 season as Gills boss but was sacked in October with the Kent outfit eighth in the League Two table at the time. The Gills finished 12th – six points adrift of the play-off zone.
Harris was appointed head coach by Cambridge United in December and had turned around their fortunes by the time that Millwall came calling for his services two months later after deciding to ditch Joe Edwards.
Harris pulled the Lions away from the relegation battle with only promoted Ipswich taking more points over his period in charge.
“Before we go to Spain, we have various fixtures that take place – either in front of fans or behind closed doors,” Harris told the South London Press. “All those fixtures were organised prior to me coming back to the football club.
“I’m pleased with the schedule we have got. I’m pleased with the amount of fixtures we have got. We have had to adjust a little bit at the end of pre season to fit in around the plans I want to have a place. We’ve been able to arrange a couple of really good games while we’re away in Europe – and we’re close to finalising our friendly at home in August as well.
“The fixtures that were arranged before we go away we stuck with because we had relationships and agreements with clubs.
“So we go to Gillingham on July 13, which is a great location for players and fans to travel to. It is a game that the two clubs had last year and was a very competitive game.
“In relation to it being my former club, it makes absolutely no difference to me. There are some people I will be pleased to see and some people I won’t be pleased to see.
“In relation to the game itself, the most important thing is the fixture is competitive and the location is close for both parties.
“We look forward to that game.”
