Berlin (d.de/dpa) – Germany and Morocco will work together more closely on climate protection and the energy transition. Germany’s Federal Development Minister Svenja Schulze, and Parliamentary Secretary of State for the Federal Minister for Economic Affairs and Climate Action Stefan Wenzel joined the Moroccan Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita to sign a declaration establishing a joint energy and climate alliance. At the top of the agenda for the new partnership is stronger collaboration on climate adaptation, expanding renewable energies and producing green hydrogen.
Moroccan Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita’s visit to Berlin included meetings with Germany’s Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock at the first session of the German-Moroccan Strategic Dialogue, which discussed issues such as the fight against the climate crisis and migration. The Middle East conflict was also on the agenda. Germany and Morocco warned of an escalation in the fighting between Israel and the pro-Iranian Hezbollah militia in Lebanon. At the same time, both countries called for acceptance of the Biden plan for a pause in the fighting. “It’s the only realistic way out of the dead-end street of war,” said Baerbock. Looking at the longer-term prospects for Gaza, she said, “Long-term security is only possible with partners. Isolation is the enemy of security.”She also stressed that Germany and Morocco together could make an important contribution to the partnership in the region. “Morocco is a reliable partner for Europe and in the region,” she added.
