The body of a tourist has been found in the Canary Islands, in circumstances similar the heartbreaking case of missing British teen, Jay Slater.
Jay, a 19-year-old lad from Lancashire, disappeared in rugged Tenerife mountainside near the village of Masca after a night out on Monday, June 17. He called his friend Lucy early in the morning, telling her he was thirsty, lost and had only 1% left on his phone battery, before vanishing without a trace.
Following a massive month long search, riddled with twists, conspiracy theories and trolling, the apprentice bricklayer’s body was found near to where his phone last pinged in a ravine in an ‘inaccessible’ part of the island. It’s thought he was trying to take a short cut, when he slipped and fell to his death.
Now, on the smallest of the Canary Islands, El Hierro, authorities confirmed they have found the remains of a tourist, who went missing last Tuesday, July 16.
Hungarian tourist Dustin Marcus was found in the El Pinar area of the island, a rural region known for its rugged, wild terrain and volcanic ravines. A search party was launched after the 46-year old was reported missing, which included a specially organised mountain rescue team, reports Canadian Weekly.
Spanish police have not released details around the holidaymaker’s cause of death. However, they paid thanks to everyone involved in the week-long search and highlighted how difficult it can be to find missing persons lost in such rough terrain. The Hungarian is the second tourist to have died in the Canary Islands, after Jay Slater’s body was found.
While police ruled out foul play in Jay Slater’s death, the two men who were last seen with the lad before he vanished may be summoned to provide information when the body returns to the UK.
Ayub Qassim, one of the last people to see Jay alive, drove him back to an Airbnb where they stayed overnight. Qassim, a convicted drug dealer nicknamed “Whisper”, might be asked to testify if an inquest believes he could provide valuable insights into the case. Another unidentified man could also be interrogated.
