I can’t get enough of the Algarve coast until the last stretch of summer, and so of its lively resort town Albufeira, known for its impressive long yellow sandy beaches and thriving nightlife.
Whenever I travel to Albufeira in September, I enjoy perfect warm weather and plenty of sunshine to lounge under the sun or take a boat tour from the picturesque town.
The beaches and villages are quieter than if you travel Algarve during the summer peaks.

Overview: Paulina’s Things to Do in Albufeira in September
- Hit the best beaches
- Explore the historic Old Town
- Explore Benagil Cave
- Visit Zoomarine Algarve
- Take a Lagos and Sagres day trip
1. Relax on Albufeira’s Beaches
Albufeira is known for its cliff-walled and extensive beaches in Algarve.
The Albufeira weather in September is typically sunny with an average temperature of 22°C (72°F), ideal for sunbathing and water sports.
Moreover, watch the sunset at Praia de São Rafael and try stand-up paddleboarding in Praia dos Pescadores. But I had fun in the after-party beach scene at Praia da Oura, where bars and clubs were lined up on the beachside.
Looking for a more secluded beach? Consider Praia dos Aveiros, close to the center of Albufeira and Praia da Coelha and near another beautiful resort town called Armação de Pêra.
2. Explore the Old Town
Albufeira’s historic Old Town is the beating heart of the city. From charming cafes to exquisite restaurants, the town center is ideal for relaxing or a nice afternoon stroll.
You can pop by Galeria de Arte Pintor Samora Barros to check out some art exhibitions.
Alternatively, enjoy local delicacies in one of the Old Town restaurants. Dine authentic seafood at A Ruina’s rooftop terrace or try homemade Portuguese cuisine at Os Arcos.
Then, party all night at Classic Bar and groove along its Algarvian moody jazz atmosphere.
3. Take a Boat Tour to Benagil Cave
Hidden under a huge limestone dome is the Benagil Sea Cave, popular to adventure-seekers worldwide.
Benagil is a must when hiking in Algarve since it’s part of the famous Seven Hanging Valleys Trail where you can see the cave from above.
The easiest way to the cave is by boat, starting at Carvoeiro Beach in a small fisher town near Lagoa.
I took the Benagil cave tour and luckily, they have modern grotto boats small enough to enter the cave during high tide.
It’s best to visit Benagil Cave, from late September to May after sunrise to avoid crowds and catch the soft morning light through the cave’s opening.

4. Visit the Albufeira Marina
Just west of the Old Town, the Marina comes alive with its bustling nightlife. Here, I often end the day with a relaxing stroll along the colorful buildings surrounded by boats.
Fancy a cocktail? Come September, the nightlife in Albufeira is like no other.
You’ll find upscale bars, including Jacks Irish Pub and Sharky’s Bar. Head to the Strip in the Albufeira Center for a casual night out.
Charter a luxurious yacht to explore the Marina.
After my unforgettable experience on the yacht tour from the Albufeira Marina, I can’t recommend it enough for anyone looking to enjoy panoramic views during a 10-minute parasailing.
5. Enjoy Dolphin Watching
A visit to Albufeira won’t be complete without signing up for a dolphin-watching tour.
Jump aboard a cruise along the Algarve coastline from Albufeira to see dolphins up close. I had a memorable dolphin sight onboard a two-hour jet boat tour.
Dolphin-watching tours depart from the Albufeira Marina and arrive at Carvoeiro beach.
The best time to see these lovable marine creatures is early mornings and late afternoons during warmer days, which is the kind of weather in Albufeira in September.
Expect to see different dolphin species, minke whales, orcas, and sea birds.
Before the tour, pack essentials like sunglasses, drinking water, sunscreen, and snacks.

6. Experience the Zoomarine Algarve
For a guaranteed marine sighting, catch dolphin shows and explore aquatic attractions at the Zoomarine Algarve, a popular waterpark and theme park in the region.
Sign up for the Dolphin Emotions Encounter experience to meet dolphins up close in under 20 minutes.
This includes free entry to the theme park, photos, and a participation certificate.
Kids and young at heart can have fun at the many pools and water slides at Zoomarine Beach.
When visiting with your family, spend a full day at the park.
Make sure to comply with the participation rules for each attraction. You can purchase your tickets online.
7. Explore the Algar Seco Cliff Walk
Situated west of Benagil Cave, the Algar Seco Cliff Walk near Carvoeiro offers stunning sea views and rock formations.
On a day trip, I explored the Algar Seco Scenic Cliff, which offers panoramic cliffs from the boardwalk. Along the way, I saw some rocky steps leading to a limestone bedrock and pinnacle resembling a doll or The Boneca.
The Algar Seco Cliff Walk is open year-round or even when you visit Albufeira in winter.
The first time I did the cliff walk in September, the weather was tricky, and I realized that some parts of the cliff needed improvement.
So I made sure to wear sunscreen and good footwear on my next hike.
8. Discover the Local Markets
Albufeira is indeed a shopper’s paradise, from streetside stores to traditional markets.
With a handful of shops lined on its narrow, cobble-stoned streets, shopping is one of the things to do in Albufeira.
Head to Mercado Municipal dos Caliços for local produce and delicious sardines. A flea market is held in the city park every second and third Saturday of the month.
It’s best to go shopping on weekends to catch as many stalls as possible.
The Gypsy Market in Albufeira is a treasure trove of bargains selling antiques and handicrafts. If you’re into street food, the famous Portuguese pork sandwich is worth a try.
9. Hike the Salgados Lagoon Nature Reserve
Bordered by aquatic vegetation, the Salgados Lagoon Nature Reserve is a coastal lagoon perfect for birdwatching.
Over 200 species of birds can be found here, including the Greater Flamingo, Ferruginous Duck, and Squacco Heron.
To access the nature reserve, follow signs for Praia Grande from Pêra. The wetland is on your left, and the car park is near the beach entrance.
I have always loved the sunsets, but when I came here for birdwatching, another favorite afternoon activity was added to my list. Don’t forget to follow the signposted trails.
10. Visit the Castle of Paderne
Built in the 12th century, the Castle of Paderne was a Roman settlement and Moorish fortress during the Almohad dynasty.
It is represented on the Portuguese flag, along with six other castles.
Paderne Castle consists of three arches and two piers. It overlooks the Quarteira River, which is around 10km away from Albufeira.
The castle is currently open to the public once a week.
During a day tour, I walked along the Roman bridge to capture stunning views framing the whole structure.
Other nearby attractions include Ponte Medieval de Paderne and Azenha de Paderne.
11. Experience Albufeira’s Nightlife
Albufeira’s nightlife is as vibrant as its beaches. The Strip, at the heart of the city, is lined with many bars, clubs, and live music venues.
The Strip comes alive with neon lights and loud crowds drinking and dancing the night away.
The popular clubs are Club Heaven, Club Vida, Matt’s Bar, Wild & Co., Sunset on the Strip, and best of all, Liberto’s “Lounge Club”.
If you want to enjoy the hard party hours until well past midnight, Kiss Club is the next place to go.
12. Take a Day Trip to the Algarve Coast
Albufeira has a sophisticated marina complex, one of the Algarve’s major ports that offers amazing coastal day trips.
I had an amazing coastal tour of Lagos and Sagres from Albufeira. Since then, I can’t help but share the experience with those who seek coastal charm and historic allure.
Lagos was remarkable. Its cobbled streets have traces of the Age of Discoveries, and the postcard-worthy moments at the Ponta da Piedade caves were unmissable.
I couldn’t believe I reached Sagres, too, a traditional fishing village away from the bustling resorts, where I stood in awe at Cape St. Vincent lighthouse, known as the “end of the world.”
