Shoot climate deniers with laser weapons: ARD produces bizarre video game for young people

In order to playfully take action against “fake news” and “disinformation campaigns”, the SWR has developed the video game “GreenGuardiansVR” on climate change. Germany is becoming a neglected desert here and the mission is to attack climate-critical groups with laser weapons.

Again and again, public broadcasters participate in the media fight against climate change with their own formats. SWR has now taken this campaign to the extreme: In a video game published by the broadcaster, young people from the age of 14 are to compete against climate change denying groups and use laser weapons.

Specifically, it is about the virtual reality game “GreenGuardiansVR”, which is to be released as an experiment of SWR in the autumn. As part of the video game fair “Gamescom”, the game will be played from the 21st to the 25th. August at the Cologne Fair will be presented for the first time. A 93-secondTraileralready enables first insights: The “Environment Venture Income League” (in German for example: Environmental Enterprise Income League), which happens to bear the acronym “Evil” (in German: evil), wants to spread the narrative that despite climate change “everything will be quite wonderful”, as the leader of “E.v.i.l.” informs.

My first thought is surely this is too absurd to be true, but the game appears to be real, there is an entry on Steam;

SWR appears to have a comparable funding model to the British BBC. According to Wikipedia SWR received just under 17% of the mandatory German TV and radio license fee in 2015. ARD is the umbrella organisation which distributes the license fee money to members like SWR.

I sure hope this murder game is an elaborate hoax, because if this is real, if this obscenity is truly the product of a state backed organisation, the world just became a much darker place.
