The Blue Marlin All-Inclusive Seascape Review
The KwaZulu-Natal South Coast, often referred to as the “Paradise of the Zulu Kingdom,” is a stretch of picturesque coastline known for its golden beaches, warm climate, and lush landscapes. Just 60 kilometres from Durban, Scottburgh is one of the most popular holiday towns on the South Coast, and the Blue Marlin Hotel has been a landmark of this town for over 70 years.
Part of the Dream Hotels and Resorts portfolio, the hotel features panoramic views of the Indian Ocean and easy access to Scottburgh’s beaches. After extensive renovations, it recently reopened as the Blue Marlin All-Inclusive Seascape, offering guests fully inclusive packages. We spent a lovely weekend there.
Although we had been to Scottburgh many times before, this was our first visit to the resort, which was buzzing all weekend. Over 50 new arrivals checked in on the day we arrived, a testament to its popularity—and the school holidays hadn’t even begun yet!
The revamped Blue Marlin hotel features a range of family-friendly facilities, including two large swimming pools with water slides, an outdoor firepit, an adventure golf course, kids’ clubs for various age groups, and a playground. Adults can enjoy the Mangwanani Dream Spa as well as the fitness and diving centres.
Daily programs for kids and adults are shared with guests via WhatsApp, making it easy to plan one’s day. Activities range from fun games and competitions to scavenger hunts and movie screenings (with popcorn) in the indoor cinema. The Adventure Desk can arrange other excursions too.
During our stay, we played adventure golf, strolled through the gardens, and took leisurely walks to the beach. We indulged in some time at the spa too, unwinding in the jacuzzi, steam room, and sauna, and enjoying soothing massages.
The hotel has 122 rooms to suit different guest requirements, including a self-catering suite and a five-bedroom penthouse. Our family stayed in a comfortable family suite with two bedrooms and a bathroom, overlooking the pools and the ocean. The rooms feature sleek, modern furnishings, neutral tones, and splashes of ocean-inspired decor, creating a soothing retreat.
The communal areas have also been upgraded with inviting lounge and dining areas. A key Springbok match was playing while we were there, and it was fun to watch it with fellow guests decked in green and gold.
Buffet meals at the Lighthouse Restaurant consist of breakfast, brunch, lunch, afternoon tea, and themed dinners, with the option to dine al fresco on the deck. During our visit, the dinner themes were “Bridgerton” and “Sophiatown”, and the menus and entertainment reflected these accordingly. Specific dietary requirements can be accommodated by prior request.
The friendly waiters, dressed in vibrant shirts, added to the tropical island-like atmosphere. They took good care of us despite the crowds and ensured that there were sufficient meal options to suit our needs.
Although there’s no need to leave the resort, if you feel like exploring your surroundings, the South Coast offers world-class diving and fishing sites like Aliwal Shoal, nature reserves with wildlife, a crocodile conservation centre and many other exciting activities within close proximity.
With its idyllic location and extensive upgrades, the Blue Marlin Hotel provides the perfect setting for an all-inclusive seaside holiday that won’t break the bank. Packages cover accommodation, dining, beverages, and various activities making it an ideal choice for families, conferences, or anyone looking to manage their budget upfront.
We met guests who were staying for two full weeks and thoroughly enjoying their time, as well as returning visitors who marvelled at the hotel’s transformation. The venue is also popular with locals for celebrations, and during one afternoon of our stay, three parties were happening simultaneously.
One thing is certain: with sunny skies, swaying palm trees, stunning Indian Ocean views, and all-inclusive meals, you’d be forgiven for thinking you were at a resort in Mauritius.
