Review: Bontle Lodge in Welgevonden Game Reserve

There’s something immensely satisfying about arriving at a lodge where the staff don’t treat you as a transient visitor, but as an old friend who’s finally made their way home. That’s how Bontle Lodge set the tone for our Welgevonden escape—with genuine warmth and hospitality. The sort of welcome that quietly says, ‘Exhale. You’re exactly where you’re meant to be.’

The name Bontle means “beauty” in Sesotho, and this exclusive retreat certainly lives up to its name. Ensconced within the malaria-free Welgevonden Game Reserve, the lodge is small and intimate, tucked into the bush with just five suites overlooking a meandering river that gurgles below the decks. There’s a sense here that time stretches and you find yourself breathing deeper, shoulders loosening in the serenity of the wild space. 

The honeymoon suite

Each of Bontle’s five suites feels like a self-contained retreat, designed to maximise both privacy and views. We stayed in the Honeymoon Suite which is even more secluded. Large glass doors open onto private decks overlooking the Mokolo River and the surrounding bush, so even time spent indoors feels connected to the wild. Interiors blend warm, natural tones with crisp, modern finishes – high thatched ceilings, textured fabrics, and carefully chosen African-inspired accents. The king-size beds (convertible to twins) have electric blankets for winter nights as well as a fireplace.

Bathroom with a view

Bathrooms are spacious, with a bathtub, an indoor shower and an outdoor shower, all offering unrivalled views of the river. Luxurious bathrobes and a full range of amenities are provided.

Outdoor Lounge

The lodge’s shared spaces are relaxed yet refined, designed for lingering. Cosy indoor and outdoor lounge areas feature comfortable sofas, safari books, and board games alongside historic items like old typewriters and cameras. There’s a beverage station with all sorts of hot drinks and a small curio shop which provides some retail therapy.  The heated swimming pool is edged by loungers and shaded seating, perfect for a midday pause between game drives.

Indoor Lounge

Meals were served in the dining area, or outside on the deck, and were thoughtfully crafted using fresh, seasonal ingredients. Chef Lebo’s spicy fish curry served with jollof rice was truly impressive, and so was the prawn salad we enjoyed for lunch the following day.

Sandi, the General Manager, was exceptionally hospitable. With his extensive experience and treasure trove of fascinating stories, he took great care of us and made us feel at home.

Game Drives

Welgevonden is one of the closest Big Five game reserves to Johannesburg—a patchwork of bushveld that rivals some of the best reserves in South Africa. Located in the UNESCO Waterberg Biosphere Reserve in the Limpopo province, the reserve is spectacularly beautiful, with rugged mountain terrain, interspersed with winding rivers, deep valleys and gorges, and grassy plains. It is also home to over 50 mammals and over 300 bird species.

Wildlife in Welgevonden

On our game drives, we lurched over gravel, enjoying the thrill of adventure you forget you’re missing until you’re in the wild. The wildlife delivered: cheetahs feasting on an impala, lions relaxing after a heavy meal, a leopard on a hunt, and even a serval, which we’ve only seen once before – prowling through the veld. Other sightings included a herd of buffalos and a huge rock monitor blocking our path on separate occasions, as well as submerged hippos, squabbling rhinos, and a sun-seeking crocodile. Our guide, Klaas, was a calm observer with the quiet confidence of someone who has spent years reading the bush like a well-worn book.

Our private deck

Bontle Lodge isn’t about over-the-top ostentatiousness or endless activity schedules. Its appeal lies in its balance: enough comfort to make you feel right at home, enough wilderness to remind you where you are. For us, it was the perfect antidote to the city stress and the most difficult part of our stay was getting back to reality.

Good to know

• Once you reach the main gate, an easy three-hour drive away from Johannesburg, you park your car just inside the gate. Your ranger will meet you and transport you to the lodge because no private vehicles are allowed in the reserve. This means that you won’t need to navigate over any gravel roads.
• Children are welcome, and toys are available for the little ones.
