The Best Way to Spend a Week in Croatia

The Best Way to Spend a Week in Croatia

Croatia has that rare mix of old-world charm and laid-back ease that makes a week feel like a proper escape. Think glittering Adriatic seas, stone towns full of history, and food so fresh it almost tastes like sunshine.

A week isn’t long, but it’s enough to dip into the highlights – just don’t expect to see everything. That’s part of the appeal. You’ll wander, you’ll swim, you’ll eat well, and you’ll probably wish you’d booked longer. If you’re trying to plan the perfect seven days, here are five ways to spend your time that show off Croatia at its best.

Discover Dubrovnik’s Old Town

Dubrovnik is the kind of city that doesn’t just look historic but feels alive. Its stone walls wrap around a maze of alleys where laundry hangs overhead and cats snooze in patches of sun. Walk the ramparts at dusk and the rooftops turn copper, the Adriatic glowing deep blue just beyond. It’s almost cinematic, though far better in person.

Many travellers opt for villa holidays in Dubrovnik, and it makes sense: your own base, space to slow down, yet steps away from the bustle. From there, you can dip back into the Old Town whenever the mood strikes.

Take the cable car up Mount Srđ for views that stretch forever, then wander down for a coffee in a shady square. Dubrovnik is beautiful, yes, but it’s the little things – the chatter of locals and the sea breeze sneaking through side streets – that make it linger in your memory.

The main street, Stradun

Explore the Dalmatian Islands

The Dalmatian Islands are strung out along the coast like pearls, each one with its own personality. Hvar hums with energy, showcasing harbourside bars and yachts lined up like a catwalk. Korčula feels more intimate, its cobbled lanes quieter, its traditions still deeply rooted. Then there’s Vis – once off-limits – now prized for its slower, sleepier pace.

Ferry rides between them aren’t just transport, but part of the fun, with the endless blue stretching out while the wind tangles your hair. One day might be all about swimming in a hidden cove, the next sipping local wine where the vines tumble down hillsides. There’s no need to rush.

These islands reveal themselves slowly, like chapters of a story. Just follow the rhythm of the sea and see where it takes you. Chances are, it’ll be somewhere you weren’t expecting but won’t want to leave. That’s the Dalmatian magic.

Split and Roman History

If Dubrovnik is polished, Split is rough-edged in the best way. At its centre sits Diocletian’s Palace – though “palace” hardly does it justice. It’s a living labyrinth of Roman walls criss-crossed by cafés, shops, and the odd laundry line. One moment you’re tracing a marble column, the next you’re sipping coffee where emperors once strolled.

The Riva promenade runs along the waterfront, buzzing in the evenings with gelato shops and people watching the world go by. Split doesn’t try to tidy itself up for visitors, and that’s its charm. There’s grit here, and energy, balanced with history so close you can literally lean against it.

Mountains loom just behind the city, ferries fan out from its harbour, and the whole place feels like a bridge between past and present. Spend a day, maybe two, and you’ll see how easily Split will leave you wanting more.

Sail the Coastline

Croatia’s coastline is best seen from the water – it was made for it. If you’re thinking of embarking on a Croatia cruise in 2025, you’ll know exactly what this means. You unpack once, then wake each morning to a new horizon: maybe a sleepy fishing village, maybe a bay so clear you can see the seabed. Life on board falls into a rhythm: swim stops in coves, seafood lunches on deck, evenings drifting into sunsets that feel almost too perfectly timed.

Cruising here isn’t about grand formalities; it’s about freedom wrapped in ease. Some days you’ll wander ashore for a stroll and a scoop of gelato, others you’ll be content leaning over the rail, watching the coast slide by. The Adriatic has a way of slowing you down without you even noticing. And honestly, isn’t that exactly what holidays are meant to do?

Inland Adventures in Plitvice

Step inland and Croatia shifts gear completely. Plitvice Lakes National Park is a world away from the coast, but it’s every bit as unforgettable. Sixteen lakes, each a different shade of turquoise, cascade into one another through a tangle of waterfalls.

Wooden walkways snake across the water so close you can feel the spray on your face. It’s the kind of place that makes you lower your voice without knowing why, almost as if you’ve stumbled into something sacred.

Spend a few hours wandering and the colours change with the light: bright and glassy one moment, deep and moody the next. Birds chatter in the forests around, fish dart beneath your feet, and time slips by unnoticed. It’s easy to see why people call it otherworldly. When you eventually head back to the coast, Plitvice will feel like a dream you’re not quite ready to wake from.

Summary

A week in Croatia isn’t nearly enough – but it’s a perfect taste. You might spend mornings tracing Roman ruins, afternoons swimming in island coves, and evenings sharing seafood beside the sea. From villa holidays to cruises that glide effortlessly between harbours, there’s no shortage of ways to fill your days.

Then there are the surprises: waterfalls in the forest, hidden squares where locals linger, or ferries that carry you off to somewhere unexpected. Croatia doesn’t overwhelm, it draws you in gently, until suddenly you’re hooked. And that’s the best reason of all to come back again.
